Photo via Shutterstock After an investigation into the rupture of the Exxon Mobil Pegasus pipeline that caused around 290,000 gallons of oil to leak into the small Arkansas town of Mayflower in March, the oil giant has issued a statement that cites a decades-old manufacturing defect as the cause of the environmental disaster. While this suggests that it was not corrosion from Tar Sands oil that caused the rupture, it does raise concerns as to the integrity of the pipeline, which runs from Illinois to Texas. Photo via Shutterstock In March, Exxon’s Pegasus pipeline ruptured in the suburban town of Mayflower , Arkansas. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of bitumen from leaked into neighborhoods and waterways from a 22-foot gash, including the nearby Lake Conway. While Exxon promised that the heavy tar sands oil would not find its way into the lake, internal emails stated that the company lied about the extent of its pollution. In response, the Department of Justice and the state of Arkansas decided to  sue Exxon earlier this month demanding $1,100-$4,300 for each barrel that made its way into the environment as well as $45,000 a day for violating state pollution storage laws. As long as industry and infrastructure relies on oil to function, there will be spills . Cleaning up such disasters, like the recent Mayflower, Arkansas rupture, can be costly and time consuming. Even the chemicals that are used to disperse and absorb the crude can be dangerous to the environment, and researchers have long been looking for greener alternatives. A new study finds that raw, unprocessed cotton may be a cheaper and safer way to soak up oil than synthetics. Comments Off on EPA Wants State Department to Reassess Their Analysis of the Keystone XL Pipeline

In March, the State Department issued a controversial analysis of the Keystone XL Pipeline that stated the project would have no significant impact on the environment. Needless to say, this raised the hackles of many concerned citizens and environmental groups . The US Environmental Protection Agency also took issue with the assessment, and this week released a document criticizing the State Department’s report. In a letter , the agency remarked that there was not enough evidence to give credence to the State Department’s conclusions concerning safety, emissions, and alternative routes. The formal objections could complicate the approval of the $7 billion project. Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline have long warned of the catastrophic impacts of a major spill if the infrastructure were to fail. On Friday, the nation no longer had to imagine how a tar sands disaster would look. The city of Mayflower, Arkansas was inundated with thousands of gallons of black diluted bitumen leaking from the ExxonMobil Pegasus pipeline, forcing the evacuation of 22 homes. Classified as a “major spill” by the EPA, fifteen vacuum trucks and 33 storage trucks have been deployed to contain the oil and keep it from spreading into local water bodies. The failure once again highlights the inherent danger in transporting tar sands oil, and adds to the pressure facing President Obama in his decision whether or not to approve the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline.
