Back in June, desktop 3D printing leader MakerBot announced plans to merge with the Israeli company Stratasys , which specializes in industrial-level 3D printing and prototyping. Yesterday, the two companies announced that the deal is done. According to Engadget , the company is planning to launch its new Digitizer next week, which will allow anyone to scan and reproduce objects using a MakerBot Replicator 2. First unveiled at this year’s SXSW , the device is able to turn small objects into 3D design files within a matter of minutes. This will allow DIY enthusiasts to quickly recreate items without the need to dabble in code. Tech lovers have already been 3D printing everything from ornaments to their own faces with small desktop 3D printers. But now the technology is even more accessible, as low-cost 3D scanners make their way to the market. MakerBot says it has a 3D scanner in the works, but Canadian company Matterform is beating them to the punch, already offering cosnumers the lightweight Photon 3D scanner  at a price that’s cheaper than a tablet.
