The London Array is the world’s largest offshore wind farm – and it looks even more amazing from space. NASA Earth Observatory just released these beautiful images of the array, which is located off the coast of Kent in England. The images show the vast expanse of the wind farm, which pumps out around 630 megawatts of energy each year. Fukushima has become synonymous with the nuclear disaster resulting from the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011. But the coastal prefecture may turn that reputation around and become known as home to the world’s largest offshore wind farm instead. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry commissioned an enormous floating wind farm project in an effort to move away from nuclear energy – and the first floating turbine was just installed off the coast of Fukushima. Just five years ago, the Iberian lynx was classified as critically endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List (IUCN), but now the population in southern Spain has nearly tripled thanks to a particularly well-designed conservation program . Funded by the Andalusian government and the European Union, the program brought together hunters, farmers and the tourism industry to revive this magnificent wild cat. The UK has starting operating the Thanet wind farm, the largest offshore wind farm in the world — for now. The wind farm occupies 35 square miles off the coast of Kent and contains 100 turbines capable of generating 300 MW of power.  This new project establishes two major milestones for Britain:  the country is now generating more offshore wind power than the rest of the world combined and it’s now caught up with other European countries like Germany by having generated 5 GW of power from renewable energy. The Thanet wind farm will only hold the title of world’s largest for a short time though.  Two larger offshore wind farms are currently under construction — the Greater Gabbard project with a 500 MW capacity and the London Array project with a 1 GW capacity — but both of those will reside in the UK, meaning it will continue to be a world leader in offshore wind

The London Array , the world’s largest wind farm now being installed in the Thames Estuary, is taking another major step closer to completion.  The project has just signed a 100 million euro contract with global cable leader Nexans to supply the high voltage undersea power cables that will transmit power from the array to the U.K. grid.
