For the first time in more than 40 years, we’re about to lose a Frank Lloyd Wright -designed building. The beautiful Lockridge Medical Clinic building in Whitefish, Montana was designed by Wright in 1958 and is one of his last designs before his death in 1958. The building was created as a medical clinic that was comfortable enough to feel like a home, complete with Wright’s iconic touches. Now, the owner wants to tear it down to make way for a three-story mixed-use development, unless someone pays $1.7 million in cash by the 10th to preserve it. Demolition preparations began on-site earlier this week. “This comes as a great shock to us,” said Barbara Gordon, executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy. “Fruitful discussions were still taking place to bring about a successful resolution to this case, which the Conservancy and our local partners have been working on for more than a year.” Related: Woman pays $100,000 for a home and then discovers it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright The Conservancy has plans to preserve the site, with demolition not slated until the end of 2018, giving the organization time to raise funds to save the building. The news that demolition was beginning early felt like a “gut punch” to those working to save the endangered building, which housed a law office until recently. At just 25 miles from Glacier National Park , the building is perfectly poised for tourism, but the Conservancy fears that unless a buyer saves the day at the last minute, the building will be lost. + Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Images via Wikimedia and the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy

Frank Lloyd Wright ’s Spring House in Tallahassee, Florida, was recently listed on the “11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Spring House Institute is trying to save it. They have started a  crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo to acquire the House from the original owners, the Lewises. One of America’s architectural gems, the house was built between 1952 and 1954, and was created with an unconventional passive solar “hemicycle” design; one of only twelve such buildings in the world.  Spring House Institute is hoping to raise $100,000 dollars to put towards preserving the building and turning it into a public venue for classes, community meetings, weddings, events, and as the home of Spring House Institute —a teaching institute. + Spring House Indiegogo Campaign + Spring House Institute The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Just 15-years-old, Angelo Casimiro has invented a new way to charge cell phones by harnessing the power of people’s steps . The industrious teen has invented a device inserted into a shoe that converts walking into piezoelectric energy, which allows users to power up their phones while on the go. The smart shoe not only creates energy from steps, but could provide important energy for off grid users or people living in developing countries that have minimal access to electricity. Comments Off on Black Friday? How About Buying NOTHING for the Holidays?

This morning Americans across the country arose at ungodly hours, braving the dark, cold, and unruly crowds all in the name of SHOPPING. Each year Black Friday marks the upcoming holiday season with a day full of frenzied shopping, and the infamous event has become as synonymous with Thanksgiving weekend as turkey itself. While some will spend the day trolling the malls for deals, thankfully there are more than a handful of people (like us!) who are just saying “NO” to excessive consumerism and spending the day doing more wholesome activities for  Buy Nothing Day. Buy Nothing is a non-profit organization initiated by Canadian Mennonites 20 years ago, inspiring people all over the world to say no to just say no to Black Friday. This year why buck the Black Friday trend by choosing not to purchase anything for the holidays at all. Are you up to the challenge? Read the rest of Black Friday?
