The Seychelles, an island nation in East Africa, recently announced the creation of two new Marine Protected Areas roughly as big as Great Britain. It’s part of what The Telegraph called a debt-for- nature swap: the island nation gets a $20 million debt relief plan backed by investors (including the foundation of our favorite eco hero Leonardo DiCaprio ), and in return it will place controls on fishing and tourism industries. In a debt-for- conservation deal designed by The Nature Conservancy , the Seychelles will protect areas covering 81,000 square miles. The move is not without controversy: fishing is limited in areas commercial fishermen and tour operators for years; in some places, like the Aldabra region, people won’t be allowed to fish at all. Tourism has been successful in the Seychelles in recent years, but The Telegraph said record numbers of visitors have taken their toll on the islands; commercial fishing has increased to meet demand. Biodiversity has eroded in the wake of two recent coral bleaching events. The Telegraph said debt restructuring will essentially send Seychelles repayments into a trust set to invest in plans to foster a sustainable blue economy. Related: Leonardo DiCaprio launches a new fund to save the lions Nature Conservancy said the Seychelles are among the nations most vulnerable to climate change because of their dependence on marine resources. They said the Marine Protected Areas will help the nation better prepare for the impacts of sea level rise , warming waters, and ocean acidification . “Without these Marine Protected Areas, activities like oil and gas exploration, deep-sea mining, dredging, and controversial fishing techniques could take place in one of the planet’s most biodiverse oceans with little or no restriction or direction,” the organization said. Today, Seychelles announced two new marine protected areas that equal the size of Great Britain. DiCaprio said, “This effort will help the people of Seychelles protect their ocean for future generations, and will serve as a model for future marine conservation projects worldwide. These protections mean that all species living in these waters or migrating through them are now far better shielded from overfishing , pollution, and climate change.” + Nature Conservancy + Congratulate the citizens of Seychelles Via The Telegraph Images via IIP Photo Archive on Flickr , Depositphotos , and Pixabay

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) just announced their biggest portfolio of environmental grants ever given. LDF is giving $20 million to organizations working for conservation , climate solutions, and indigenous rights , to name a few. DiCaprio made the announcement yesterday during the Yale Climate Conference hosted by John Kerry , former Secretary of State. LDF CEO Terry Tamminen said, “With a lack of political leadership, and continued evidence that climate change is growing worse with record-breaking heat waves and storms , we believe we need to do as much as we can now, before it is too late.” LDF will give over 100 organizations grants across six categories: wildlife and land conservation; marine life and ocean conservation; indigenous rights; climate change; innovation, technology , and media; and LDF’s California program, targeted to help local communities transition to sustainable infrastructure, energy , and food . Related: Leonardo DiCaprio launches a new fund to save the lions In his speech at yesterday’s conference, DiCaprio called for people to get involved in tackling climate change. He said people can do three simple things: first, vote in the midterm elections next year for candidates who believe climate change is one of the most important issues the United States must address. Second, buy from environmentally friendly companies, and boycott those funding climate deniers or offering products that hurt the environment. Third, support charities and non-governmental organizations working for climate solutions. DiCaprio said, “I still believe that the United States has the potential to lead the world on this issue. We can only hope that the President begins to see it too…Time is up. The current events are a global wake-up call that must be heard all the way from you, to the private sector, to Washington, D.C. It is too late for any of us to be too timid or too ignorant or too silent. We must all take action together now.” + Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Via the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Images via screenshot

For his National Geographic Channel documentary Before the Flood , Leonardo DiCaprio stopped in to chat with Elon Musk at the Tesla Gigafactory . The two celebrities talked about how a carbon tax could help countries switch from fossil fuels to clean energy, and Musk specified just how many Gigafactories it would take to enable the entire world to run on renewable energy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZm_NohNm6I On site at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada, DiCpario and Musk talked about the dangers the world faces with climate change precipitated by burning fossil fuels like oil and gas . According to Musk, the fossil fuel industry is the world’s largest industry with “more money and more influence than any other sector.” He spoke of the hope for a “popular uprising” against the industry but also said “we are unavoidably headed towards some level of harm.” Musk showed how his company, Tesla , is working to combat that industry with their Gigafactory. Related: Elon Musk wants to build Tesla Gigafactories all around the world So how many Gigafactories do we need to enable the world to run on renewable energy? According to Musk, it would take just 100 Gigafactories. But Tesla can’t build them all; Musk called for large companies in China, Europe, and the United States to “do the same thing” and build factories to make batteries for storing renewable energy. Governments can help out too, according to Musk, by setting up regulations or laws to ease the transition away from fossil fuels. In the video Musk said, “Unless there’s a price put on carbon…” and DiCaprio completed his sentence with, “We’re never going to be able to make the transition that we need to in time.” Musk said, “the only way to do that is with a carbon tax.” The National Geographic Channel released DiCaprio’s documentary in 45 languages and 171 countries on October 30. The hour and a half documentary follows DiCaprio’s three-year journey to learn more about climate change, and the National Geographic Channel is offering the documentary for free so more people can view it. The 918-square-foot house sits on a 28 acre forested site in Rhinebeck, New York called T2 reserve. It is an experimental landscape slated to be subdivided into five different plots. By intersecting spheres and tesseract trapezoids, the architects came up with a design that features dynamic spatial relationships. This is first felt at the entry porch, where an orb of wood carved out of the main volume of the house welcomes the entrant. Related: 7 Questions with Architect Steven Holl The house is powered by geothermal and solar energy. Thin film  photovoltaic cells are connected to a battery energy storage system, making the house completely self-sufficient. All the fixtures inside the house were 3D-printed, while the glass and wood were sourced locally , minimizing the home’s embedded carbon miles. + Steven Holl Architects Via Archdaily Photos by Paul Warchol

Two organizations backed by Hollywood star power recently announced a partnership to pursue climate action . The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation will give a grant of $650,000 to R20 Regions of Climate Action (R20), started by Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to a statement, the sum will go towards “renewable energy, energy efficiency , and waste management initiatives.” Using the grant, R20 will identify green initiatives to benefit people around the world, construct projects, and then track their impact. R20 works with regional governments to bring about change more quickly than often happens at a national level. They work to identify and help fund community projects such as a solar bakery in Burundi, a waste management program in Algeria, and an LED streetlight program in Brazil. Related: Leonardo DiCaprio delivers passionate speech to the UN on climate change DiCaprio said in a statement, “The Paris Agreement was an important first step for reducing global carbon emissions , but there is more that must be done to accomplish this important goal. Our partnership with R20 is a signal that it is also the responsibility of private organizations to take up the charge of accelerating the adoption of climate-saving technologies, worldwide. We call on others to follow our lead because our planet is quickly running out of time.” The partnership aligns with the goals of the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance started by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon . In the statement Secretary-General Ban said, “Partnerships like this one strengthen the effort to unlock billions of dollars of private investment in projects that will urgently address climate change . I thank them for their commitment to our environment, and to the future of humanity.” The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has been around since 1998, working to combat climate change and conserve nature. R20 is a relatively newer player – in 2010 Arnold Schwarzenegger started the organization which now works with more than 560 ” subnational and local governments ” around the globe. + Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation + R20 Regions of Climate Action Images via Wikimedia Commons and R20 Facebook
