Oiio’s ingenous Oto pods are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The bubble-like cabins sit on a swappable wheelbase that can follow roads or climb up buildings to help people get around Los Angeles . The see-through autonomous pods could someday be part of the solution to addressing the city’s notorious congestion and air pollution.   The idea behind the pod is that traditional cars take up too many resources for transporting one or two people. Unless your car is packed full, you are driving around with a trunk, excess engine capacity and rear seats that you don’t need. The Oto pod is bare bones transportation that eliminates the waste. The concept was conceived for the Automobility Designer/Developer Challenge at the LA Auto Show this year. The challenge asks designers to create concepts for the future of transportation. Each Oto pod is broken down into three components: a cabin, wheel base and shuttle. An individual could own the cabin, but the wheel base and shuttle would be shared and are interchangeable. The pods could affix to a track system that runs along roads or up walls. Related: Petal-shaped stations and rapid transport pods are an elegant green mobility solution for Dubai “It is possible that, in the future, LA people would be able to own only the cabin and, through AI centrally controlled circulation, they could create a temporary assembly-unit, an ephemeral design, which would serve their ‘exact’ needs on demand,” said Oiio. + Oiio Via Dezeen

There are some designs that just make your jaw drop – and the Sun Rain Room is definitely one of those. Designed by London-based Tonkin Liu Architects , the spectacular curved studio is clad in glass panels and topped with a green roof . It’s is also equipped with one awesome feature – a grey water system that showers collected rainwater over the patio at the push of a button, transforming it into a beautiful reflecting pool. The studio, which is just over 800 square feet, is a two-story home addition used as a studio and guest cottage. According to the architects, the design was created to provide a calming, nature-infused space would be “a good place to be on a bad day.” Related: Rural Italian home clad in lush greenery blends into its idyllic surroundings The elongated curved shape mimics the curvature of the sun and allows optimal light to pass through into the interior. Covered in stunning greenery , the roof acts as an extension of the surrounding landscape, which culminates in a vibrant, multi-layered urban garden . On the interior, the ceiling is spotted with round coffered skylights that “echo” a pattern of raindrops on water. Clad in floor-to-ceiling windows, natural light floods the interior spaces, which include a studio, a bedroom, and two bathrooms, as well as a garden room that opens up to the outdoor patio. The beautiful design implements a unique rainwater system which includes filtering rainwater into a large storage tank. At the touch of a button, this water is used to “rain” over the sunken patio, converting it into a reflecting pool. + Tonkin Liu Architects Via Archdaily Images via Tonkin Liu Architects

VW has unveiled the updated 2017 e-Golf electric car with some huge improvements. Unveiled at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show , the updated e-Golf, like the recently updated BMW i3 , comes with a 50 percent improved driving range of 124 miles on a single charge. The 2017 VW e-Golf has a new 35.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that’s an improvement over the old 24.2 kWh battery. That’s good enough to give the e-Golf a driving range that will now beat the Nissan Leaf, but it’s still short of the much anticipated Chevy Bolt with its 238 mile driving range. The 2017 e-Golf can be recharged in less than six hours using a 240-volt outlet or up to 80 percent in an hour with the faster DC fast charging option. Related: VW’s new electric car goes further and costs less than the Tesla 3 or Chevy Bolt In addition to the upgraded battery, the new e-Golf is getting an updated electric motor. The electric motor now generates 134 horsepower, which is 19 more than the first e-Golf. The maximum torque has also increased from 199 pound feet to 214 lb-ft. More power means that the 2017 e-Golf is now more than a second faster with a 0-60 mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph. Inside, the 2017 e-Golf now features VW’s new Digital Cockpit, which displays all necessary information on a 12.3-inch color screen. A new 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system has been added and within the next two years the system will also offer gesture controls to operate the various menus. Lastly, the 2017 e-Golf does get a few styling updates, like new bumpers and LED lights. + Volkswagen All images © Volkswagen

Award-winning paper bike helmet keeps cyclists safe anywhere they go

When it comes to life-saving protective gear, “collapsible” doesn’t seem like a word you’d want to hear, but this folding bike helmet just won a top design award for its unique design and unusual strength. Created from an expanding honeycomb of thick paper, the EcoHelmet designed by Isis Shiffer makes it easy for a commuter to carry a bike helmet anywhere they go, particularly when traveling in urban centers and making use of rented bikes. Shiffer created the low-cost helmet after realizing how difficult and expensive it could be to buy or rent a helmet while traveling overseas, where bike rentals are common but helmets are a different story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu0Lb0C0UzY The 28-year-old New York resident created the folding bike helmet in response to a conspicuous absence of helmets in bike-sharing programs. Rather than go without a helmet and risk major head injury in a crash, Shiffer designed the EcoHelmet as a portable option for cyclists who need a light load, but still care about their safety. The EcoHelmet was just named the international winner of this year’s James Dyson award , after securing the national prize in the US. Related: Mobile cooler designed by 22-year-old Will Broadway could save 1.5 million lives The helmet’s creator, a graduate from the Pratt Design Institute in New York, has been working to develop sustainable bike helmet alternatives for some time. The EcoHelmet is her latest offering, and to ensure its worth, Shiffer developed the design while working with a crash apparatus during her brief time at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College, London. She plans to continue honing the design, perhaps adding a biodegradable waterproofing material like wax, before moving forward into production. Ideally, Shiffer envisions the folding bike helmets for sale through vending machines, installed alongside bikeshare stations. For a low cost, cycle renters would have access to a safe, durable alternative that could be reused for some time. She is considering designing some kind of durability indicator for the helmets, so that users have a visual reminder of when it is time to recycle one helmet and pick up a new one. Winning the James Dyson award grants Shiffer with a $45,000 prize to develop her project, as well as a $7,500 prize to her university. Via The Guardian Images via Dyson
