In a bid to bolster the importance of sustainable development, General Motors is building a tiny urban homestead out of a recycled shipping container in Detroit. Along with the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) , TAKD Design and Integrity Building Group , GM is transforming the container into an agricultural research center that a student caretaker will manage for one year. The tiny home will sit on an urban farm plot , which the student will be responsible for maintaining and harvesting. The term “emergency housing” can have a negative connotation, conjuring up images of FEMA trailers or makeshift tents offering very few creature comforts. Fortunately, New York City and Garrison Architects have worked hard to turn this stereotype around for New Yorkers displaced by future disaster events with a new prefab housing prototype in Brooklyn. Co-Directors Melissa Troutman and Josh Pribanic of Public Herald  have teamed up with Tesla to test the company’s nationwide Supercharger system as they travel the nation in a Tesla Motors Model S . They’re showcasing their investigative documentary Triple Divide , which demonstrates the horrors and dangers of hydraulic fracturing (or “ fracking “) in rural Pennsylvania. Canada-based AeroVelo just launched a Kickstarter campaign to build the world’s fastest bicycle! Last year, AeroVelo narrowly missed winning the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada, but they are confident their new design will be able to reach speeds of around 140 kilometers (87 miles) an hour.
