Dutch architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has released a teaser video showing off its design of a Hyperloop project that promises to link Abu Dhabi and Dubai . The ultra high-speed capsule transport aims to turn the 93-mile trip between the two busy cities into a minutes-long commute, offering an efficient means of moving both people and cargo. Jakob Lange, a partner and head of BIG Ideas (the design firm’s tech division), leads the video sneak peek ahead of the Hyperloop design’s November 7 unveiling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypab90bc1Yw BIG ’s design is the result of a partnership with Hyperloop One (formerly Hyperloop Technologies), which is one of the two companies racing to build the first working Hyperloop track in the United States. Hyperloop One recently tapped BIG to aid in the design of its Hyperloop plans for the United Arab Emirates, with architecture and engineering firms AECOM and Arup on board to translate the technology into actual infrastructure. Related: Hyperloop One raises $50M and hires former Uber CFO as an advisor “We are in a new time now where you can develop a new transportation system in very few years and change the world,” said Lange in the video. “We’re not waiting for new technology like carbon nanofibers or anything in order to do this. We have everything we need to do it.” BIG’s design involves Y-shaped supports that elevate the Hyperloop itself, a track that carries high-speed passenger pods from one stop to the next at speeds over 700 miles per hour. The technology behind Hyperloop One’s UAE project may not be that different from tests of its propulsion system in the Nevada desert, where the proof-of-concept prototype reached 116mph in a staggering 1.1 seconds this past May. Still, there is a lot we don’t know about how the UAE track will be built, when construction might begin or end, and how much the project will cost. BIG’s teaser video offers an early peek at the design, with more coming on November 7, but even that could change in response to the demands of the still-emerging technology. Hyperloop One plans an underwater version of supersonic tube transportation

Imagine the Port of Los Angeles moved 10 miles off shore with ships docking at floating stations and cargo containers transported underwater from the coast via supersonic tubes. The coastal areas where the Port of Los Angeles used to take up miles of space has been transformed into parks, residential areas, office complexes and beaches. That is the future envisioned by L.A.-based startup Hyperloop One that is developing the technology to realize Elon Musk’s dream of moving passengers and cargo at supersonic speeds through evacuated steel tubes. “We’ve been talking to a lot of the port authorities around the world about re-engineering their ports in this kind of fashion,” Peter Diamandis, a Hyperloop One board member and CEO of the X-Prize Foundation, told Business Insider . He said clearing the land along the coast could create the conditions for a “huge real estate boom.” Diamandis said that in Long Beach, near where he lives, there is a “beautiful California coastline that is basically covered with ports or cargo containers and ships. Imagine if you could regain all of that coastline for parks and homes and beaches by taking the port and putting the port 10 miles off shore.” Related: Hyperloop One opens the world’s first Hyperloop factory Diamandis also confirmed to Business Insider that Hyperloop One is discussing underwater passenger travel. He said that there have been proposals to transport passengers underwater between Norway and Sweden. Hyperloop One is also involved in a partnership with a Russian company to build a Hyperloop in Moscow and possibly beyond and is exploring the possibility of a route between the Finnish capital, Helsinki, and the Swedish capital, Stockholm. On May 11, Hyperloop One conducted the first live trial of the technology at a test site in the Nevada desert about 10 miles north of Las Vegas. The Propulsion Open Air Test (POAT) involved a sled that was propeled by electromagnets to a top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h) along a track measuring 1,500 feet (457 meters) long. + Hyperloop One Via New Atlas Images via Hyperloop One

Canadian island invites American immigrants escaping a Donald Trump presidency

“Is this for real? Yes. Is this a joke? No.” Cape Breton Island is serious about taking in American immigrants if Donald Trump wins the presidential election. All political ideologies are accepted on the northeastern Nova Scotia island, and – if Trump does win – may create an opportunity for the coastal region to build their population – instead of a wall. The Cape Breton If Donald Trump Wins website, created by a local DJ, touts all of the finer features of the island, including warm summers, rich cultural diversity, and North America’s first carbon neutral university campus. According to CNN , the “Trump Bump”  surge of interest in the island has resulted in at least one tourism association reporting increases in vacation bookings between 20 and 200 percent. Related: Someone built a tiny wall around Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star “We are experiencing a bit of a population problem at the moment,” says the website. “We need people. We need you!” Cape Breton is about twice as big as Delaware and working to rebuild its coal mining heyday with the tourism industry. What seems to have started as a joke has morphed into a growing economy, thanks to those looking to escape either the 9 to 5 grind or a climate change-denying , immigrant-alienating, narcissistic, talking traffic cone hellbent on initiating the end of days. One bold Reddit user claims to have captured a photo of a high-speed  Hyperloop test track being built outside of Los Angeles at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. The post, which originally went up yesterday, has Hyperloop enthusiasts and graphics experts in a tizzy, debating about the authenticity of the Redditor’s claim. If this image is genuine, it marks the very first glimpse of the futuristic public transportation system that could someday allow commuters to travel up to 700mph between major cities in California. Lawmakers in California passed a bill yesterday  outlawing the sale of nearly all ivory and rhinoceros horn products in the state. This move is an attempt to reduce elephant and rhino poaching, which is threatening both species with extinction. The ban gives current owners of ivory products until next summer to sell the items, before facing hefty fines and jail time. Solar panels work by being pointed at the sun. Everyone knows this. But, in some areas of the earth, a double-sided solar panel is just the thing you need to maximize the sun’s energy. Canada-based Silfab Solar recognized the potential for a two-faced solar panel , particularly in its ability to capture sun reflected back up from a snowy surface. The company has announced they intend to begin offering a new bifacial solar module by the end of this year.
