Living in America, it’s easy to forget that developing countries have a harder time providing the many things we take granted such as water, electricity, and education. Now a South African-based telecommunications company, the MTN Group is looking to improve literacy by providing downloadable books to any Ugandan who owns a mobile phone. The local telecom partnered with the ad agency MetropolitanRepublic Group in a campaign called “The Everywhere Library” to give out e-books using newspaper ads and simple cellphones. The utility responsible for Japan’s crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has confirmed yet another leak of carcinogenic, strontium-containing wastewater from storage tanks at the site. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said 110 US gallons had spilled from a 450 ton container, and that the wastewater may well have leaked into the sea. The accident occurred when workers misjudged the capacity of the tank, which was tilted on uneven ground, and subsequently overfilled it with wastewater . With many accidents preceding this latest spill, it is likely to bring even greater scrutiny on TEPCO. Just one day after Google announced its purchase of hand gesture recognition company Flutter , the search giant has applied for a patent for gesture-based car controls. On first read, the notion is pretty comical—as Engadget points out, the current array of oft-used in-car gestures serve little purpose other than to rage at fellow drivers. But Google hopes that we might be able to diversify a bit—changing the radio station or adjusting the a/c with little more than a wave of the hand.
