The world’s largest solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System , officially opened for business a few days ago, but not all environmental advocates are happy about that fact. The plant, which consists of 350,000 mirrors spread across 5 square miles works by concentrating sunlight and using it to turn the water in a series of enormous towers into electricity-generating steam. That incredible amount of heat does more than just generate power, however; it also fries any birds that happen to fly over the plant. The dream of 3D printing in space is speeding ever closer to reality. Last year, word that NASA intended to send a 3D printer to space  smacked of a lofty dream machine. But just a few weeks ago, Made in Space wrapped up another pre-launch 3D-printing test, which included an exercise that solved the infamous 1970 Apollo 13 problem , when moon-bound astronauts jury-rigged their own carbon dioxide filter in a harrowing number of days, in just hours with a newly printed replacement part. The densely populated neighborhood of Haenggung-dong has been designated as a car-free zone for the month of September, and citizens have been given a variety of human-powered and electric vehicles as part of the EcoMobility World Festival .
