Aymeric Renoud‘s R chair is the first in a series of four furnishings that explore one of the most basic notions of sustainability, the 4R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink). The idea for this chair was to adopt a minimalist approach in order to reduce waste and provide material economy without compromising sturdiness, aesthetics and durability. The R Chair features a slender folding frame strung with hand-dyed hemp rope. Material economy helps to reduce the chair’s impact, and the entire piece was assembled by hand and finished with natural materials. Aymeric Renoud created the R Chair for a study project at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design . + Aymeric Renoud The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. When it comes to green furniture design , it doesn’t get much more natural than  Erez Nevi Pana ‘s Soilid Chair , which is made from a mixture of soil, fungi and other natural materials. The materials are measured by volume and weight, mixed together and left to rise overnight at room temperature. The Soilid mixture can then be shaped and molded in a plaster or wood mold to create different shapes. Dutch designer Reinier de Jong gives new life to old broomsticks with his STEEL chair (steel actually means handle in Dutch). Each chair is made from 10 meters of handles that still show traces of their former use. He invites everyone to contribute to the project – you can donate old wooden handles from brooms, rakes, shovels, flagpoles, and banisters as long as they are 28 or 29 mm in diameter. For each usable meter of old handles, Reinier de Jong will donate 1 Euro to charity. + Reinier de Jong The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader.
