After being used for over 100 years it’s fairly safe to say that the incandescent bulb is old technology, and it has taken a long time for new technology to replace it. After a brief rise in the popularity of CFLs, the most recent technology to catch on is the LED bulb – but are they worth the additional expense? This infographic from Sunpower UK compares the three different types of bulbs and reveals which type is the best bang for your buck. Technology research is often about finding ways to combine two different functions into one tool or, as you might have heard it said before, kill two birds with one stone. In the Netherlands, a consortium of research facilities and energy companies is a little closer to doing just that. By combining solar energy generation with much-needed noise-reduction barriers along a busy Dutch highway, the team hopes to prove that they’ve developed an environmentally-friendly solution to two of modern life’s biggest challenges. CFL bulb photo from Shutterstock A study by the State University of New York at Stony Brook revealed that manufacturing flaws in some compact fluorescent bulbs can lead to potential UV exposure . Compact fluorescent bulbs, which have become popular in recent years as the result of new federal efficiency standards , are an energy-efficient alternative to the common incandescent bulb. But due to manufacturing flaws, they could expose skin to the damaging effects of UV light, potentially leading to skin cell damage and possibly cancer . Early Edison light bulbs were a thing of beauty, but they were also terribly inefficient. Modern LED bulbs are much more efficient, but they aren’t always beautiful. Luke Anderson, a product designer from Lancaster, PA, wants to change all that by creating an LED light fixture that pays homage to the art of the bulb without sacrificing efficiency. The result is the Alva Lightbulb Lamp, a modern interpretation of the Edison bulb.
