Gogoro’s battery-swapping electric Smartscooters are enormously popular in Taiwan, set to launch in Amsterdam this year, and they could be coming soon to a city near you. To help spur their uptake, Gogoro just unveiled a new GoCharger at CES that lets you charge up Smartscooter batteries at your home. (Previously, users only had the option of finding a battery bank and switching out their batteries there.) This new initiative not only makes users more independent, but batteries placed in the GoCharger connect with the consumer’s smartphone. This makes it easy to track charge levels and rates, monitor battery health, and it’s also possible to receive charging notifications. It’s been a whirlwind year for Gogoro – since launching in January the company has rolled out a battery-swapping network in Taipei, sold 3,000 electric Smartscooters , and it recently raised $130 million in additional funding. But Gogoro ‘s next move could be its biggest yet: the company just announced plans to bring its all-electric scooters and energy network to Europe next year, starting with Amsterdam.
