Image via Flickr The sun is shining on solar energy across the world. In 2012, a record  31,100 megawatts of solar photovoltaics (PV) was installed, pushing the total global solar power capacity past 100,000 megawatts. Now, new reports from the Earth Policy Institute and Worldwatch Institute find that more countries are getting into the solar power game as costs come down and installations ramp up. Solar PV installed capacity increased by 41 percent in 2012 alone, with more than 30 countries now claiming capacity of over 100 megawatts—a figure that is projected to double by 2018. Having an alarm system is great when robbers strike, but the rest of the time, it can be kind of a pain. False alarms and overly simple sensors mean that sometimes you have to do the thinking for your alarm system. That could change thanks to a new smart alarm system called Canary that can actually tell the difference between a normal day at your house and an event like a fire or burglary. The best part is that the longer you have it, the smarter it gets. Today Global Solar unveiled a new type of flexible solar module that builders can stick directly on the roof, rather than constructing racks to hold heavy glass-covered cells. The modules won’t cost less than traditional arrays, at least initially, but they make it easier to include solar power at the time of construction and, without the racks, can cover a greater portion of the roof and provide more power
