Using a simple triangular frame, a few shovels packed with snow and ice and a deep respect for traditional building methods, New York-based artist and designer Nikolas Bentel manged to construct an  igloo in the form of a geodesic dome. The Geodesic Igloo project was an attempt by Nikolas and his brother,  Lukas Bentel , to prove that durable shelters can be built using basic construction methods in the most extreme and inhospitable climates. According to Nikolas, the Geodesic Igloo project is an “architectural exploration blending traditional igloo construction with the modernist tradition of geodesic domes.” The ultimate goal was to prove that using a blend of traditional building techniques and modern forms, durable shelters can be built in the most extreme climates. Related: The North Face unveils a geodesic tent that can withstand 60 mph winds To start, the designers headed to the snowy landscape of Adirondacks in the dead of winter. Considering that a geodesic dome requires only one triangle shape repeated 15 times, the only material that they brought with them to the building site was a frame made up of equilateral triangle forms. Using the frame to cast the individual triangles, the designers filled the molds with buckets of water. When they were sufficiently frozen, the panels were then fitted together to create a cohesive domed structure. All in all, the frozen structure took just four hours to construct and lasted for almost two months. According to Bentel, the geodesic igloo, which comfortably houses two people, used a fraction of the snow needed to build a traditional igloo. In fact, using thin sheets of ice enabled the structure to be almost completely transparent, allowing natural light to penetrate the interior during the day. Inspired by 20th-century architect R. Buckminster Fuller , architect Pavlina Williams transformed a decrepit dome house in Palm Springs into a dreamy retreat that channels bohemian and mid-century modern vibes. Now available as a vacation rental on Boutique Homes , the Geodesic Dome House offers stunning desert views on a private five-acre lot. Keep reading for a peek inside. Pavlina  and her husband Carter worked on their passion project on weekends and completed the renovation in a year. The key to the redesign was opening up the interior to natural light; Pavlina ordered custom windows from Home Depot to create a band of glazing for panoramic views . For a more modern appearance, Pavlina and Carter ripped up the existing flooring to expose the structural slab, which they then polished. When asked by Boutique Homes about her favorite part of the home, Pavlina replied, “The location and the views. It’s five acres — and you hardly see the neighbors. You’re in the middle of nowhere. I mean that in a good way. You have the windmills all around you, so it feels like this is the end of the road, like you are here on your own. I love the desert, I love the mountains. The huts are insulated to withstand the seasons, and each structure has a single window that offers  natural light and incredible views of the surroundings. Bjarke Ingels Group has revealed images for the firm’s first-ever tiny house—the A45—designed for the prefab-housing startup Klein . Inspired by the traditional A-frame cabin, the A45 takes on an angular form conducive to rain run-off and easy construction. The 180-square-foot timber cabin boasts a completely customizable interior design and can be built within four to six months in any location. Constructed in Upstate New York, the prototype for the A45 tiny house is clad in blackened pine with a triangular glazed end wall to immerse homeowners in nature even when they’re indoors. The triangular floor-to-ceiling window—made up of seven glass pieces—and the soaring 13-foot-tall ceiling help create a sense of spaciousness despite the structure’s small 180-square-foot size. The cabin is slightly elevated on four concrete piers in order to minimize site impact and to give homeowners the freedom to place the tiny home in areas without heavy machinery. “The resulting crystal-like shape gives A45 an ever-changing appearance,” said BIG in a statement about their modification of the traditional A-frame cabin. “Upon entering, the 180 [square-foot] interior space reflects a minimal Nordic abode prioritized for ‘hyggelig’ comfort and design.” The subtle natural material palette, from the exposed timber frame built of solid pine to the Douglas Fir floor planks and the space-grade insulating natural cork walls, further emphasizes the Scandinavian aesthetic. Cedar clads the compact bathroom, and the fixtures were sourced from VOLA. The home get all of its power from  solar panels, and the service equipment is hidden from view in the back. The cozy interior is furnished with a Morsøe wood-burning stove and handcrafted Nordic furniture including pieces by Carl Hansen and a bed fitted with Soren Rose Studio’s Kvadrat fabrics. F.Domes currently offers two lines, Glamping and Classic. The Glamping domes include a “panoramic bay window” and can even be insulated so they can be inhabited in colder weather. F.Domes offers four sizes, and the smallest size at 20 square meters (215 square feet) can be popped up in four to five hours. The Glamping domes can go off the grid and can have wood-burning stoves. F. Domes says they can withstand extreme weather including “coastal winds and heavy snowfalls.” Related: 5 great reasons to build a geodesic dome home The Glamping domes are targeted towards hotels looking for a fun alternative, and clients like Harriniva and Skeena Heliskiing have already taken F.Domes up on the offer, popping up beautiful domes in Finland and British Colombia. Then there are the Classic domes, which F.Domes recommends for uses such as a winter garden, playground, or yoga dome. There are four Classic sizes. The company says the self-assembled domes are made of “durable materials” that can resist weather like wind, snow, and “even earthquakes.” They say the domes “do not cost the Earth, but still perform great.” One notable Classic dome client is Google . They used the F.Domes Classic 75 (about 807 square feet) for the Google for Education program in the UK. The dome acted as a traveling classroom as Google showed how technology could change education. Another client was the Das Stue hotel in Germany, who used a F.Domes Classic 30 (around 322 square feet) for a cool ” chill-out lounge ” for guests. Richard Buckminster Fuller is considered by some to be the grandfather of the American green movement – an avid inventor and professor , “Bucky” is credited as the first designer to introduce the geodesic dome to the American landscape. Fuller’s own dome-shaped house in Illinois is an educational tool that students have enjoyed for years, however it has experienced its fair share of wear and tear after decades of use and it’s in need of a renovation. Thankfully, the Fuller building has just won the  Save America’s Treasure Federal Matching Grant of $125,000, which will go towards its restoration. The grant will match each and every dollar donated to the Fuller Dome Home up to $125,000 – and each $100 donation underwrites a specific triangle of the dome’s structure, giving contributors a chance to support a piece of green design history.
