Recently, I had the luxury of spending a week on the road to drive my daughter Sofija back home to Minneapolis from Oregon, where she goes to college. We covered over 2300 miles in five days in a rented Ford Fusion Hybrid. (The car was a revelation — 44 miles per gallon, a beautifully designed interior and enough cargo space for five suitcases, a bag of trail mix and five chocolate bars.)

The all-new 2013 Ford Fusion has been named Green Car Journal ‘s 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 LA Auto Show. The Ford Fusion emerged on top of a field of finalist, which included the 2013 Dodge Dart Aero, Ford C-MAX, Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Prius c. One of Ford’s big announcements at this year’s NAIAS is the new C-Max, a car which will be available in two different models with different styles of hybrid propulsion on the same body and frame. Ford has seen competitors Toyota and Chevrolet going after the hybrid and electric vehicle market with two different approaches. Toyota has the hybrid Prius which couples electric drive with a gas engine; Chevrolet has the Volt which is an electric drive car that uses its gas engine as a generator for extended range travel.

Although green cars are present in greater numbers than ever at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, they are not necessarily the most interesting environmental story. Many manufacturers this year have one model or another of their cars connected to a pylon with a conspicuous electrical cord, as manufacturers including Chevrolet, Ford, Volvo, Toyota and Volkswagen all had plug-in hybrids or EVs on display

Comments Off on Prius Brake Failure Complaints Rising as Toyota Prepares to Launch New Subcompact Hybrid

This has been the worst year Toyota has ever had for recalls (4.8 million), but so far its reputation for quality seems to be weathering the storm. Even with the sudden acceleration issues, rust problems, deaths , and Toyota’s generally poor handling of it all, consumers so far seem to be willing to forgive.

As an undergrad in college, I had the privilege of twice attending the annual Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. SEMA is mostly known for wild, outlandish, and powerful versions of street cars; it isn’t the kind of place you go to find people discussing fuel efficiency and hybrids. But 2009 is a year of reckoning and big changes are afoot in the auto industry
