One of the best parts about electric cars is how connected they are. While some automakers have released apps connecting owners to their electric cars via their smartphone, others are taking connectedness a step further. To people’s wrists. Ford has announced a new smartwatch app called MyFord Mobile that lets drivers check important data, like available driving range, straight from their Android Wear or Apple Watch . Following the announcement earlier this month that the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is now America’s most fuel-efficient 5-passenger car , Ford has announced that buyers in California are now eligible for an extra $2,500 state tax credit. As gas prices get closer and closer to $5 a gallon, this extra savings could help boost sales of the car in the Golden State at a time when EVs need it most. The $2,500 would be in addition to the original $7,500 federal tax credit, giving the Focus Electric a total $10,000 in tax credits. The Focus Electric has a starting price of $39,200. Ford Motor Company just officially started production on its new Ford Focus Electric 2012 model in its Wayne, Michigan assembly plant. The Ford Focus Electric is the first EV of its kind to receive a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating, and it charges two times faster than the Nissan Leaf – the only other electric vehicle in its class. One third of Ford’s 2012 vehicle lineup consists of cars that get 40 mpg or better fuel ratings. The company has completely revamped its Wayne factory to create a flexible assembly line, and it has installed one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state. We can’t wait to see the zero-emission Ford Focus Electric start arriving at dealerships soon! Comments Off on Five Finalists for Green Car of the Year Announced

On November 17 at the LA Auto Show, the Green Car of the Year Award will be given out for the seventh year.  The five finalists for that prize have been announced and they represent a cross-section of what’s available in cleaner cars these days. All-electric models are represented by the Ford Focus Electric and the Mitsubishi i.  The Mitsubishi i is wildly popular in Asian markets and although it hasn’t hit U.S. markets yet, it will be available by the contest’s January 1 deadline. The new Prius v is the only hybrid contender, but is being recognized as a new extension of the popular brand to a larger customer base. The Honda Civic Natural Gas was chosen because it runs off cleaner burning compressed natural gas, a fuel that is pretty much ready for mainstream if cars are built to use it. Finally, the Volkswagen Passat TDI takes up the final space in the contest.  The TDI is diesel vehicle that boasts great fuel economy and fewer emissions. These five were also chosen as Green Car Journal’s top cars for 2012. via LA Auto Show

Ford Motor Company is going to increase the number of electrified vehicles it builds to more than 100,000 units annually in 2013; three times the current level of production. Ford will be producing five different EVs in 2013, including the Transit Connect Electric van , the Focus Electric – which begins reaching customers later this year, plus the two new C-MAX vehicles (C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid), and a fifth, as-yet unnamed hybrid. While this is still only a small part of Ford’s total production (Ford produced 1.9 million vehicles in 2010), it is becoming more than a fraction of a percent of the company’s effort.
