The Air Above sculpture frames nature’s beauty from all sides

In The Air Above, environmental designer Michael Pecirno explores how a public sculpture can derive form and purpose entirely from its surroundings. Clad in polished, reflective stainless steel, the sculpture mirrors its environment of maple trees, open grassy spaces, and the sky above. These vignettes frame the beauty of the sculpture’s surroundings and allow it to become a subtle addition to the landscape. The Air Above, takes the form of a twelve-sided irregular dodecahedron. None of the shape’s sides are the same size and none of its joints meet at the same angle. To create the sculpture, Pecirno created a detailed 3D model of the site, observing what should be in each panel’s reflection. This allowed Pecirno to capture the sky, the trees, and the grass. From certain angles the sculpture appears to camouflage into its environment. + The Air Above Images via The Air Above The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Comments Off on Regulators in Ohio Declare Fracking Causes Earthquakes, Increase Regulations

New regulations are coming to the Ohio natural gas industry thanks to the discovery that misplaced hydraulic fracturing wells are the cause of earthquakes in the area. Ohio regulators discovered that lack of geological information on fracking sites led to earthquakes in the Youngstown area just months after hydraulic fracturing for natural gas began there. The regulators have now instituted stiffer regulations for the natural gas extraction industry that include submitting geological logs to the state, a ban on drilling into Precambrian rock, and the adoption of new state of the art machinery that will help monitor wells to make sure they are safe. Surrey City Centre Library, British Columbia’s latest architectural landmark, was designed with the input of hundreds of community members. Local firm Bing Thom Architects made space for the public voice by setting up a Facebook page, Flickr account, and blog to facilitate an open discussion and encourage photo sharing. The result is stunning – the 82,000 square foot library houses multiple community rooms, a lounge with a fireplace, an atrium, coffee shop, and 80 public computers all under one green roof . Natural light floods the grand staircase and open study spaces, while comfortable-looking chairs of all shapes and colors invite visitors to take a seat and dive into one of the 100,000 books that line the shelves.
