Click here to view the embedded video. Volcanoes are fascinating, powerful, and somewhat mysterious. Researchers at University of California at Berkeley have been working on shedding a little light on the subject, by using supercomputers and seismic waves to build a 3D map of the Earth’s interior . They did it, in part, to explain how volcanic islands, like Hawaii, are formed. But their research also provides a deeper understanding of the nature of volcanic activity deep under the Earth’s surface. Standing desks are a nice solution, but they can be super expensive and switching between sitting and standing can be a nightmare. Not anymore. Perch Sit-to-Stand Desk is not only affordable (right now, a 29-inch desk starts at $179), but it can easily switch from sitting to standing and it looks awfully good to boot. The desk even has the ability to hold two screens/computers at different heights. The desk is so great that within two hours of launch, the project was fully funded on Kickstarter . Click here to view the embedded video. The Celtic Sea, located off the south coast of Ireland, is a curious place; home to common dolphins, harbor porpoises, fin whales and a surprising number of marine predators, but it has yet to be designated a protected Marine Conservation Zone. In the hopes of learning more about this diverse and mysterious region, an unmanned solar and wind-powered vehicle, the C-Enduro, known more familiarly as Thomas, is spending a month surveying the area with GoPro  cameras, meteorological equipment and marine mammal acoustic detectors. And once Thomas has spent a month out in the Celtic Deep it will return with a wealth of information that will assist oceanographers in not only better understanding the area, but also in developing a plan for protecting the Celtic Deep. Under the streets of Tokyo, there is a hidden secret that most people would never imagine – and it’s delicious. It’s not an off-the-map soba shop or some tucked away sushi joint, but a farm. Tokyo Salad is the new underground agriculture experiment run by Tokyo Metro – the folks who manage the subway lines. The Metro launched the subterranean hydroponic farm this past January, and it is already providing greens and sprouts to local restaurants. Read the rest of Tokyo subways sprout underground farms

Click here to view the embedded video. There’s little doubt that sharks are a force to be reckoned with, but it turns out that the natural world can provide something more baffling and fearsome that any made for TV movie: a phenomenon that can only reasonably be termed a “sharkcano.” A group of scientists surveying Kavachi , a very active volcano 60 feet below the ocean’s surface near the Solomon Islands, were stunned to discover that there are two species of shark living in the hot, highly acidic waters within the crater. Click here to view the embedded video. China… the final frontier. These are the voyages of a building that looks remarkably similar to the starship Enterprise. In truth, there are not going to be any voyages for this Enterprise, because it is an earthbound building. The wonderfully named gaming and mobile company NetDragon Websoft has taken Trekdom where no one has gone before by designing its headquarters in Fuzhou, Fujian, China to be a remarkable accurate homage to one of the most iconic ships in the galaxy (though whether the Enterprise could make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs is still up for debate). Give in to the geekiness; resistance is futile.
