Comments Off on Ford’s new electric SUV will battle Tesla’s Model X

Over the past few days, Ford has released lots of new information about its future lineup at the Detroit Auto Show. While our eyes were on its latest trucks and even a new Mustang, the automaker quietly dropped some information about its new electric SUV that’s slated to arrive in 2020. In a tweet, Ford posted a quick teaser video with the end of it announcing that the new SUV will be called the Mach 1. Mach 1 isn’t a new name: its roots go back to the 1960s when it was introduced as a performance package for the 1969 Mustang. The decision to use the name for its new electric SUV alludes to the performance that Ford expects from the vehicle. Rather than create en electric crossover, like the Chevy Bolt or upcoming Hyundai Kona EV , Ford is going at it from the other end of the spectrum with a high performance SUV that will rival the Tesla Model X. When it does arrive in 2020, it will already have a long list of new rivals, including Jaguar’s I-Pace , Audi’s e-tron SUVs and maybe even an electric Porsche SUV. + Twitter All images ©Ford

Comments Off on Ford is building a 300-mile range all-electric SUV

In an unexpected announcement today, Ford revealed that it will add an all-electric SUV to its current lineup. The SUV will have a 300-mile range and will hit the markets in the US, Europe and Asia by 2020. The company also announced that it will introduce a hybrid version of its iconic Mustang and F-150 pickup truck. A 300-mile range would put Fords as-yet-unnamed SUV well ahead of the competition (Tesla’s Model X has a 289-mile range. The company says that it reached that figure after examining current driving habits, which show that most consumers drive 60 miles a day or less, and that most people charge their vehicles once a day. With 300-mile range, consumers wouldn’t have to worry much about the electric vehicle’s nemesis: range anxiety. Related: All new cars in Germany must be emissions-free after 2030 The new vehicles will be built at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan plant, while other newly-announced electric transit vehicles, designed for police use, will be built in Chicago. Ford is also working on a new wireless charging technology, which would allow drivers to park in designed spots and charge their vehicle without plugging in. Good design really does make all the difference when it comes to energy conservation. This residential building in Lustenau, Austria, has no active, energy-intensive heating, ventilation , or cooling systems . Instead, baumschlager eberle architects opted for passive design features that allow users to regulate indoor temperatures and ventilation themselves. The building relies on natural principles to provide optimal environmental conditions within its well-insulated stone envelope. The inner layer of this shell ensures high compressive strength, while the other layer guarantees efficient thermal insulation . Recessed windows reduce heat gains, while sensor-controlled vents fastened on the inside provide fresh air. During summer nights, the vents open to induce a draft for natural cooling . + baumschlager eberle Via Architizer Photos by Arch Photo, Inc.

Comments Off on Jaguar’s new I-Pace electric SUV is ready to take on the Tesla Model X

Jaguar is taking aim at the Tesla Model X by unveiling the I-Pace – an all-electric concept car that previews an SUV set to launch in 2018. The I-Pace features a 90 kWh battery, a driving range of around 220 miles, and it generates 394 horsepower and 516 foot-pounds of torque from two electric motors . Jaguar also says the I-Pace will be able to reach 60 mph faster than most sports cars at around four seconds. Jaguar debuted the I-Pace this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and according to the automaker, the concept is not far off from the production version. Since the I-Pace doesn’t use a conventional engine, designers were able to maximize space for passengers and their stuff. Thanks to its cab-forward design, the I-Pace will have more interior room than many larger SUVs. Once inside, you’re greeted with a large center-mounted 12-inch touchscreen and an additional 5.5-inch touchscreen. The traditional instrument cluster has been replaced by another 12-inch screen with a color head-up display.
