Comments Off on BP Deepwater Horizon Gulf Oil Spill Trial Delayed One Week

The trial that will decide BP’s culpability in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was set to begin in the US District Court in New Orleans today, but has been postponed to allow the oil company to continue to discuss settlements with plaintiffs in the case. Experts say the oil company faces up to $52 billion in fines and liabilities, making this case the largest corporate offense in history that requires a fine paid to the U.S. government. The disaster is sure to become one of the most expensive environmental disasters in history and the postponed trial is set to decide exactly how expensive it will be. The new start date is set for March 5th and the trial is expected to last at least two years. According to scientists, there are mussels at the bottom of the ocean that are efficiently converting hydrogen into energy in their very own, nature-made hydrogen fuel cells. The mussels, discovered by the Max Planck Institute of Marine Microbiology and the Cluster of Excellence (MARUM), were found near hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor and have onboard symbiotic bacteria that convert hydrogen into energy . With this discovery, researchers might be able to clone the hydrogen eating bacteria to create all-natural hydrogen fuel cells to power things other than sea life. The Jacobson Residence is a brand new construction in  Los Angeles with a high eco factor – enough so that it is  Build It Green and ENERGY STAR certified! If you’re not familiar with Build It Green, it’s another green building certification, not quite as popular or well-known as USGBC’s LEED program, but still an effective tool to help build more sustainable homes. LA-based  Wick Architecture was responsible for the design of this home, which includes rainwater collection,  eco-materials , and energy and water efficient design (and we have to say it’s easy on the eyes too!).
