These days, it’s not unusual to meet a teenager with a head full of marketable ideas. Unlike some enterprising youngsters, however,  Shubham Banerjee isn’t on a quest for fame or fortune. The 12 year-old California seventh grader has a unique understanding of technology’s power to create positive change in the world, and if his recent science fair project is any indication, we can expect big things from his brain. Rather than develop yet another baking soda volcano, Banerjee used a  Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit and a few bucks worth of hardware from Home Depot to create a working Braille printer that costs a fraction of similar gadgets currently on the market. Keep reading to find out how he did it and why. 2011 Was the 11th Hottest Year on Record

An average global temperature of 57.9 degrees Fahrenheit marked 2011 as the 11th hottest year on record. At a full 0.9 degrees warmer than the 20th century average, this past year was hotter than every year in the last century except for 1998. The sentiment among  climate scientists is that higher temperatures are largely sustained by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, especially  carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This means that if global emissions aren’t curbed and development continues without consideration for climate, the future will be full of freaky storms, extreme weather, and even more record-breaking weather anomolies. Greenbiz.com recently released their free, downloadable “State of Green Business 2012″ report and some of the statistics are quite surprising. The report begins by explaining the stalemate on green progress by saying that “…sustainable business is suffering a recessionary hangover.” The study goes on to look at 20 key indicators, such as organic agriculture, e-waste , and  toxic emissions, to determine whether US businesses are “swimming”, “sinking”, or “treading water”. With only 80% of the indicators getting a “Tread” or “Sink” rating, this is a big wake up call that most big companies are not doing their part to make progress towards a sustainable future. Next-Gen Electronics Charge Themselves With Energy-Harvesting LCD Screens

Engineers at UCLA have developed technology that allows energy gobbling gadgets like smartphones and laptops to convert sunlight, ambient light, and their own backlight into energy. Equipping LCD-enhanced devices with so-called polarizing organic photovoltaics will recoup battery loads of lost power, and enable smartphone users to scour Yelp, scan Twitter, and update their Facebook page without fear of draining the charge before a real communication crisis arises.
