It’s almost that time of year again. Where did summer go? As the kids start heading back to school, everyone is feeling both stressed and excited, so one of the most important things parents can do is to ensure they are getting a good night’s rest. One major things that can prevent healthy, restorative sleep is a bad mattress. Nowadays, conventional mattresses are chock-full of harmful toxins that prevent us from sleeping well, not to mention make us sick. Did you know that most standard, non-organic mattresses contain threatening levels of synthetic flame retardants laced with VOCs (volatile organic compounds)? These toxic off-gassing chemicals easily collect in dust, remain circulating throughout your home for years, and are correlated with a myriad of health issues, including allergies, asthma, hormone disruption, endocrine problems and in some cases, cancer. Fortunately, there are safe mattresses on the market that are supportive, made with natural materials, and comparable in price to conventional ones. And if you’re in the market for an organic mattress right now, you’re in luck. Thanks to Naturepedic , you could win a brand new, 2 in 1 Organic Ultra cotton twin mattress just in time for the new school year. Naturepedic’s beds are made with the finest certified organic cotton, and pass all Federal flammability standards without the need for flame retardants. If you’re a parent, student, or know someone deserving of this precious gift, enter to win below! HOW TO ENTER: 1. Sign up for the Naturepedic newsletter here > 2. Leave a comment below telling us why you want to win a Naturepedic 2 in 1 Organic Ultra cotton mattress, and what you love most about the mattress. SOL Water is a curious new product by Tortoise Gear , a California-based designer of survival gear. It’s a hydration bag that the company claims doubles as a water-purifying device, harnessing the power of the sun to kill microbes in your water. Tortoise Gear, run by a husband-and-wife team, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to produce three sizes of the bags. So, would you trust the sun to clean your drinking water? The average person sleeps around eight hours a night — which amounts to a third of your life spent in bed. But despite the amount of time that we find ourselves tucked under our covers, most of us don’t give much thought to the place we plant our bodies when night falls (or when a nap calls). While it’s well-known that getting enough sleep is vital to our health and our ability to function effectively, many of us don’t consider the fact that the quality of sleep we get also plays an important role. One way to improve your night’s sleep is to invest in a high-quality 100% natural mattress. One of our favorites here at Inhabitat is by Coco-Mat , a family-owned, eco-minded company producing  sustainable beds designed for the deepest of slumbers. Each of their beds is made from multiple layers of natural materials that provide optimal, elastic support to the human body, without the use of metal springs. The eco-friendly company only utilizes natural materials from renewable sources, such as coco fiber, natural rubber, wool, cotton, sea weed, horsehair, silk, linen, wood and goose down (read: no toxic chemicals or retardants ). Established in 1989, Coco-Mat has developed a global following – and they recently set up shop right in the heart of New York City !
