The Department of Education is sending letters to 387,000 individuals who are eligible for a “total and permanent” discharge from their student loan debt . The move cuts through some serious red tape for the people who need debt relief the most, namely people who have a disability that prevents them from being able to work and repay their loans. Last year , Google.org announced their Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities competition, and over 1,000 nonprofits from 88 countries submitted designs for open source technology that could improve the lives of disabled people around the world. This week, Google.org announced the 29 winners , to whom they have dished out a cool $20 million. The one billion plus people around the world who live with a disability, physical or developmental, face enormous challenges that too often are ignored by the able-bodied majority. People with disabilities and those who love them endure despite these challenges, but they need advocates to help make the world accessible. It’s hard to think of a more influential, global advocate than Google. A new eco-friendly vehicle from Absolute Design could make independent, low-emission transportation possible for people who utilize a wheelchair. Most of us can’t even imagine what life would be like with a disability . We take walking, running, driving a car, and playing with our kids for granted, but for those who must spend much of their day in a wheelchair, these things are a challenge. For those dealing with severe arthritis, amputations, multiple sclerosis and other physical disabilities, shopping for clothes can be more of a challenge. Enter Xeni, a clothing line started by Ann Oliver, a former architect with MS. The line of clothing addresses some of the shortfalls of conventional garments, replacing buttons with magnets, for example, and accommodating prosthetic limbs and medical accoutrements.
