Buyers can already purchase the X5 plug-in hybrid, and starting this spring, BMW plans to introduce a 3-Series plug-in hybrid called the 330e. The 330e will ease buyers into the electric lifestyle with a 22-mile electric-only driving range, while an efficient four-cylinder will keep them going for a total driving range of 373 miles. International transportation and delivery service Uber announced that the company will be purchasing 2,500 driverless vehicles from Google. The companies agreed to share Uber’s local transportation data which will help widen and improve the efficiency of car-routing algorithms used by Google’s GX3200 self-driving cars . The $375 million purchase will mark Uber’s largest investment to date and also the first deal Google has made involving its new driverless vehicles. After five years of silence, Detroit Electric has resurfaced with the announcement that they will debut a battery-powered two-seater sports car on April 3rd. Headed up by former Lotus executive and Managing Director of Apple’s Asia operations Albert Lam, Detroit Electric promises to be the fourth automaker to be born in Motor City , creating 180 jobs by the end of 2013 with a production capacity of 2,500 luxury electric vehicles each year. It will become the first North American jurisdiction to eliminate coal from its electricity sector, saving around $4.4 billion per year.
