Darwin Road Residence: Evolve Architecture Unveils a Beautiful Garden Home in London

This new house by Evolve Architecture is situated on a backland site of old allotments in Ealing, London. It was designed with a collection of pitched roofs rising towards the centre of the site and low at the boundaries. The L-shaped design offers views onto the garden and the house itself. The open plan kitchen is at a raised half story level with bedrooms below. The facade is clad in grey spruce echoing the timber fences around. The finished house is spacious with an intimate quality of an oasis within the city. + Evolve Architecture The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Resolution 4 Packs A Lot Into A Poolhouse
Image Credit Resolution 4 Whenever I write about the work of Resolution 4 I have to run for cover, from the complaints about showing “trophy homes for investment bankers driving a Hummer packed full of over-privileged kids.” So it is nice to be able to show one that is only 832 square feet, designed for a cheesemonger and an actress. OK, it is a second home and it is a poolhouse, but it turned out to be as much as they needed.

You WIll Probably Live to See ‘Dangerous’ Levels of Climate Change
Stephen Yeargin, via Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0 As far as Americans are concerned, climate change is a perpetually distant and ambiguous threat. Some glaciers thousands of miles away might melt, some poor people might suffer through droughts in Africa, some polar bears might drown. Et cetera. This ‘distance effect’ is, partly, what drives global warming to the bottom of our priority lists time and again. It’s an amorphous problem, ever-looming. That’s what it seems like, anyway. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

StreetFilms /Video screen capture No Longer Stuck in the Middle, Waiting for Left Turns I’ve said it again and again: To increase cycling as a main form of transportation, our roads need to be modified to make it safer and more convenient for people on bikes to get where they’re going. This means physically separated bike lanes ,

Images via YouTube video We have bomb shelters, cellars for when tornadoes hit, houses on stilts for floods… but what do we really have in the case of a tsunami? New Comsopower, a Japanese company, has come up with a novel safety measure for surviving such a disaster. It’s called Noah, a capsule that’s designed to bob in the water until the contents reach safety. While it’s designed for people, could it be possible that this may really act as an ark?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Photos: Toshihiro Sobajima for Atelier Tekuto Earth building is unusual in Japan, a nation better-known for its high-tech and ultra-modern architecture. That’s why this single-storey earth-brick residence in Chiba, Japan by Atelier Tekuto is so striking: not only does its curves differentiate it from the cookie-cutter linearity of its neighbours, but its slick interiors are a departur… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Compact Kitchen Folds Up And Hides When Not Needed

Images credit Johanneke Procee Almost every kitchen you see, no matter how big or how small, seems to have the same form, an upper cabinet a foot deep, a lower cabinet two feet deep, and a counter in the middle. Really, little has changed since Christine Frederick in 1910 . That’s why Johanneke Procee’s Keukenkabinet is so interesting; designed for small spaces, it hides the bulk of the kitchen away when you are not using it, freeing the space for other uses….
