Controversial artist Damien Hirst has turned his focus from diamond skulls to green building, announcing plans to design an eco-friendly town near Ilfracombe north of Devon, England. Hirst’s Southern Extension includes plans for 750 sustainable and energy-efficient homes, and it’s envisioned as a model for other parts of the United Kingdom. The town also features a school, playground, offices, retail space, and a health center – and it will be powered largely by wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels . Damien Hirst is perhaps best known as an extraordinarily provocative, sometimes playful artist who makes an incredible amount of money from his conceptual art — in a surprising shift, he now aims to channel some of that wealth into a new role as a pioneer in eco-housing development . Hirst, who is purported to have a horror of “anonymous, lifeless buildings,” has unveiled plans to construct over 500 eco-homes in an effort to revitalize his adopted hometown of Ifracombe in Devon, UK. On October 14th, British artist Damien Hirst’s butterfly painting I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds (2006) sold for 2,2 million pounds (3,5 million dollars) at Christie’s auction in London . This may not be such a shocking figure, considering his pickled shark sold for 17 million pounds in 2008 .
