In a unique redevelopment of a mill compound, Venkataramanan Associates executed a high-tech environment for Nirlon IT Park in Mumbai, India. The architects took care to incorporate several Danish best practices to address flooding, a problem the city is prone to. As a result, a 250 meter long body of water runs through the site, forming the spine of the master plan with its elegant sweeping curve. Moreover, verdant terraces punctuate the mass of buildings offering a calming environment that is evocative of an older Mumbai. With highly sustainable and energy efficient buildings, when finished, the campus will be the first of this scale in India to achieve LEED certification . + Venkataramanan Associates The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Cancer researchers in the UK have discovered a way to turn colchicine from the crocus flower into a new treatment that acts like a smart bomb to target cancerous tumors. Colchicine is naturally toxic to the human body , but it is also well-known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties . The team of researchers created a delivery system that allows the chemical to travel through the body with its toxic properties switched off. Once it arrives at the cancer site , an enzyme in the tumor naturally reactivates the colchicine. The chemical then goes to work cutting off blood supply to the tumor in order to starve it. Sure, you can save fuel by making lighter cars and  more efficient engines or by adding new batteries , but what if fuel economy could be boosted just by changing the bad habits of drivers? That’s exactly what researchers at the University of California, Riverside’s Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CERT) are working to do. Using a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Energy, the group of scientists is finding ways to change our behavior when we’re in the driver’s seat to maximize our mileage and improve our fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent. It may seem easy, but we all know that old habits die hard. Image Credit: Sears . Why don’t we show more houses that look like this? I have never considered the Record Houses at Architectural Record to be the most cutting edge stuff around, but the editors evidently get a lot of flak for their choices
