Dazin Fuel Cookie helps save lives by eliminating deadly cooking smoke

Open fire cooking is a silent killer that according to the World Health Organization (WHO) claims the lives of 491 people each hour, which is more than AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis deaths combined. They’re called “the forgotten three billion” by the WHO: the people across the world using coal and biomass as fuel on simple stoves and open fires, in order to cook and heat their homes. While smokeless stoves are available, the people receiving them can’t afford to buy them, nor the inevitable maintenance costs. So Dazin  developed an innovative, sustainable solution that will help save lives. Dazin provides impoverished rural communities in Bhutan (with plans to take the solution beyond Bhutan) with a sustainable fuel source and a smokeless gasifying stove in exchange for forestry wood waste . “One hundred dollars can give a stove and smokeless fire to a family for life” says Deepak Ashwani, Executive Director of Dazin. “By making forestry waste into a safe fuel source, the impact of each donation is continually multiplied due to Dazin’s stove cost recovery model and other families can benefit.” The company is crowdfunding here and hopes to eventually confine this dangerous method of cooking to history. + Dazin Fuel Cookie The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Taking your hobby to Kickstarter can be thrilling for small business owners with big ideas, and many projects end up getting a lot of love. It’s less sweet, however, when your crowdsourcing campaign brings up copyright allegations, though. When Seattle-based Silvan Audio Workshop launched a crowdsourcing effort to fund the creation of custom handmade wooden turntables, they were quickly faced with accusations from Joel Scilley of Audiowood , an established company making very similar turntables. Scilley claims the father-and-son team of Silvan Audio is infringing on his copyrighted design by producing their handmade audio elements. A new crowdfunding project aims to put the power to fight colony collapse disorder in the hands of everyday people. Now, anyone can log on and download a simple design for their own internet-connected beehive . These hives do more than provide a home for local bee populations — they also give scientists new tools to monitor global bee health using specialized sensors which track geolocation, humidity, temperature, bee numbers, and even the mood of the colony. The hope is that being able to crowdsource this data will help scientists better understand why bees are declining and how to protect them.
