Non-profit Architecture for a Change transformed a former shipping container into a chic coffee shop in Johannesburg, South Africa. Operated by Roast Re:public , the converted container coffee shop is lined with cork tiles made from recycled bottle cork waste. The unit was prefabricated in a design-build workshop and installed within just one day thanks to its “plug and play” design. In keeping with its motto “coffee with a conscience,” Roast Re:public employs and empowers young entrepreneurs from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to run the franchise. + Architecture for a Change The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Looking to really delve into ecological design? Enrollment is underway for the fall semester at Ecosa Institute in Prescott, Arizona. It’s one of the first organizations to offer programs in sustainability and ecological design, and many say that Ecosa Institute’s Ecological Design Certificate Program is a life and career-changing experience. The American Institute of Architects has cited that this particular program (from August 29 – December 9, 2016) as an example of a school that offers “a host of known experts and intensive coursework for young students.” They said, “In many ways, what students get in one semester is a more holistic understanding of sustainability than they could presently get at any traditional design school.” Students will learn to think like a designer, unleash their creativity, explore systems thinking and develop real world solutions to local and global issues. + Ecosa Institute
