Since 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies, and 3.573 million people die each year from water-related diseases, it’s clear that securing safe water sources in communities around the world is a pressing issue. Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) have created a device that might help with the problem — the Swimming Behavioral Spectrophotometer (SBS) monitors the swimming patterns of protozoa — the world’s smallest animals — contained in the device to detect toxins in water.
