Seattle-based startup WISErg puts its founders’ software development backgrounds to innovative use, addressing the massive issue of food waste with the production of the Harvester. A commercial-grade, onsite composter for food retailers and restaurant use, the Harvester uses smart technology to monitor inputs and processing, giving owners the ability to understand more about why food is going to waste so they can take steps to reduce loss. Once the Harvester has done its job, WISErg then collects the nutrient-rich compost and converts it into liquid fertilizer to be sold to local gardeners and organic growers. The University of British Columbia has a new, eco-friendly addition: a 15-foot stainless steel in-vessel composter called the CityPod . Recently installed in the university’s new recycling room, the composter takes care of all food waste and compostable tableware from the school’s catering and food service operations. Food waste from all around the building is collected in 35-gallon bins lined with compostable bags, and those are shredded with a Bokashicycle Pulveriser before being tossed into the composter, where it’ll be processed in a short 6 weeks. Compost taken from the CityPod will be used to nourish the herbs and crops growing in the UBC rooftop garden . + Vertal + City Pod Images via the City Pod Facebook page Missing Attachment Missing Attachment Missing Attachment Missing Attachment Missing Attachment Read the rest of The First CityPod Composter Has Been Installed in a Canadian University Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: city pod , city pod composter , CityPod , CityPod Composter , compost , compost machine , compostable , composter , composting , composting machine , food waste , recycling , rooftop garden , ubc , University of British Columbia , vertal

South Africa is a historically coal-hungry nation, producing around 225 million tonnes of the stuff each year. But just two years ago, government leaders pledged to invest an incredible $5.4 billion in renewable energy , and the products of that investment are taking shape. The Jasper PV Project in Kimberly, South Africa, became fully operational in October, and produces enough power to serve an impressive 80,000 homes. It’s now the largest solar power plant in Africa. The better news? It’s soon to be eclipsed by an even bigger facility nearby. Many cities around the world now have composting programs so household food scraps and garden clippings can be mulched rather than ending up in landfills . This is a great practice, but there are also a lot of places that don’t have a program like this, including the little village I currently live in. Whether you’re a country bumpkin living on the edge of a forest (like us) or a suburbanite with a bit of yard space to play with, it’s actually quite simple to create a compost bin of your very own : all you need are a few low-cost items from the hardware store.
