“LOCK” is a coffee table designed out of highly sustainable bamboo . Bamboo is a strong flexible beautiful and renewable material – it grows without the help of fertilizers and is mature enough to be cut after three years. The frame is build up from layers of flexible bamboo that are pressed together and then shaped by honoring bamboo’s natural bending curve. The layers of bamboo curve through each other and entwine, locking each other in place. The layered frame uses two different color-tones: natural and caramel bamboo. This “layer cake”enhances the curves and shape of the table. The end result is a mix of nature and mathematics, of possible and impossible with a dynamic shape that looks different from every viewing point. + Plankton

Some people may choose an intriguing art book or knickknack to place on their coffee tables as conversation-starters, but with this mind-bending sculpture the coffee table itself is the centerpiece. Inspired by the now-classic movie “Inception,” Stelios Mousarris created a masterpiece featuring a curved wooden city which is quite literally turned on its head. New York City-based designer J. S. Nero created the WiVes’ Table , a versatile coffee table that can be set up in a variety of different styles. The designer heat-bent an equilateral steel triangle into a sturdy three-point, origami-like base. The folded metal base can be used as a table on its own or it can be paired with a slab of wood for greater surface area and a different look. Currently, the line is available in raw steel, custom patina, semi-gloss white, and high-gloss yellow powder coats. + J. S. Nero The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Salvaged elements of rustic beauty and heavy industry fuse together to create this beautiful recycled coffee table by designer Thomas Troisch . Troisch lives in a port city, and he drew inspiration for his piece from the by-gone era of majestic ocean-liners, with their polished wooden decks and hand-hammered copper boiler plates. To create the table, the designer combined a single 6 x 3½?, 3? thick salvaged ponderosa pine slab top with an all-copper base, stacking them into a design infused with the spirit of recycling. + Thomas Troisch The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Comments Off on $5 Worth of Shipping Pallets Transformed Into an Awesome New Coffee Table

We write about awesome green design every day on Inhabitat, so I can’t help but feel rather jealous of the designers who make all of this inspirational stuff. Last weekend though, I got it in my head that I needed to be a “maker” rather than just a “writer.” So I headed to Recycle Utah , my local recycling center, and picked up five old shipping pallets so I could make a new coffee table for our house. 8 hours later, having used about 100 finish nails (and having fallen victim to 20 or so splinters), my shipping pallet coffee table was complete! I’m not gonna lie – I’m proud of it and also happy I didn’t chop off a thumb in the process. Read on to see how I did it.
