The realm of science is not wholly unlike the realm of journalism. Many feel that a tenet of the trade is to observe and report without getting involved. However, the new leader of the world’s foremost climate science agency disagrees. Hoesung Lee, the newly appointed head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), thinks it’s time to shift the focus from investigating the effects of climate change to finding solutions. A leaked draft of the  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ‘s next big climate report finds near unanimous certainty that greenhouse gas emissions from humans are primarily responsible for global warming. While their finding should surprise absolutely nobody, the 95 percent figure is, in fact, five percent higher than the one reached in the IPCC’s 2007 report. The United Nations panel also concludes that if emissions continue unabated, sea levels could rise by more than three feet by the end of the century, threatening major cities such as New York, Miami, London, Shanghai and Sidney. Image via Climate Progress I think for the most part, the New York Times is still the most reliable source for breaking news and good information out there. But they have been seeming to slip in their coverage of climate change–for instance, they ran a story on the front page today crying U.N.
