Henning Larsen Architects just won an international competition for a new landmark building in the heart of Manila, Philippines. Designed in collaboration with landscape architects SLA and BuroHappold Engineering , the dramatically tapered high-rise for Bonifacio Global City is a sculptural beauty that combines Filipino traditional design with contemporary influences. The mixed-use building will be filled with natural daylight and prioritize access to nature. Rising to a height of 308 meters, the landmark tower is designed to redefine the skyline of Bonifacio Global City, a centrally located financial district in Manila . The high-rise will comprise state-of-the-art workspaces, restaurants, a civic center with exhibition spaces, and a public observatory at the top of the structure. The large public plaza that surrounds the building will be densely planted with tall trees and mimic the shade and ambiance of a Filipino tropical forest. The plaza serves as a protected public space for large gatherings and celebrations, a tradition emphasized in Filipino culture. The project is characterized by a high degree of responsibility, in relation to not only materials and production but also regarding positive, social spaces encouraging intimacy and community,” says Claude Bøjer Godefroy, Partner and Design Director in Henning Larsen’s Hong Kong office. “This building represents a milestone for Manila and the Philippines. We aimed to make it a truly Filipino building by understanding and integrating elements of Filipino nature, culture and climate.” Trees grow inside the building and will be visible through the glazed facade. The next time you visit Beijing you may want to get your sled ready. China’s ever-evolving capital will soon be home to a stunning new civic center topped with an artificial snow-covered slope perfect for skiing and sledding. Designed by architect Andrew Bromberg of Aedas , the civic center, called the China World Trade Center Phase 3C, will merge energy efficient principles with mixed-use programming that accommodates the arts, outdoor recreation, and even organic farming. Set for completion in 2020, this extraordinary project is the final piece of the China World Trade Center masterplan, which includes Beijing’s two tallest towers to date in the city’s business district. With its eye-catching sculptural shape and ample green space, the Phase 3C development will serve as an anchor and gateway to the complex. Instead of massing the buildings around a single street-level civic green, Bromberg elevated the green space to the upper level to create a series of green terraces outfitted with seating and large trees. The shape of the elevated building dips towards the street corner but gently lifts up towards the tall towers. An Olympic-sized indoor ice-skating rink will be located directly below the largest roof garden, which sits above multiple levels of retail. Parking is tucked beneath ground. The building will also include an amphitheater, art studios, exhibition spaces, an organic farm , cultural and educational facilities, a rock climbing wall, theater, and a water play area that can be converted into an outdoor ice skating rink in winter. The crown jewel of the project is the sloping hill at the crest of the building that, with the use of artificial snow, will be turned into a slope for skiing and sledding during the colder months. Related: Smog-filled Beijing is building a ‘green necklace’ around the city to curb pollution To lower its energy footprint, the building will be clad in low-e , low-iron glass and is designed to maximize indoor access to natural light to reduce electricity demands. Existing trees will be transplanted onto the roof of the development and the natural landscaping will help reduce the city’s heat island effect and solar gain. Specially chosen plants and an efficient irrigation system are expected to reduce the project’s landscape requirements by as much as 30 percent as compared to the project baseline for the peak watering month. Mission Viejo , California has become the latest in a string of cities to try out a new sustainable street-scale solar powered trash compactor called the BigBelly Solar Compactor .  In partnership with its waste hauler Waste Management , the city hopes to cut trash pickups from street containers by up to 80%, which in turn would help cut greenhouse gas emissions , reduce fuel use, and shave some costs off the city’s waste hauling budget. The city is starting with two BigBelly solar compactors at its Civic Center, and it anticipates a successful trial.  Solar technology and battery storage technology are rapidly approaching the point where solar equipment can operate without the need for direct sunlight every day, so look for more urban street fixtures to go solar in the near future
