Yesterday GM turned heads at CES with the launch of the groundbreaking 2017 Bolt electric vehicle , the first electric car with a long electric range (200 miles per charge, comparable to a Tesla Model S ) but an affordable sticker price (~$30,000). We chatted with Pam Fletcher , the Executive Chief Engineer of Electric Vehicles over at GM to learn more about this accomplishment and what it took for one of the world’s largest car manufacturers to unveil such an innovative car. The all-new 2016 Chevy Volt is officially on sale, but if you live in any other state besides California, you’ll be disappointed to hear that you may not be able to buy the new Volt. Initially it was reported that GM was going to limit the initial availability of the 2016 Volt to just 11 states, but now GM has decided to limit even further to only California. The news is obviously a big blow to plug-in hybrid buyers who may have been excited about the new Volt and its extended electric driving range. In addition to their potential mitigating effect on climate change , their physical components are proving to be excellent homes for wildlife, such as the endangered scaly-sided merganser. A mohawked duck native to temperate East Asia, the merganser is the most recent species to have benefited from GM’s nesting boxes crafted from recycled Chevy Volt battery covers. The number of electric vehicles hitting the market continues to grow each year and with that comes the concern about what we’ll do with all the lithium-ion batteries that power the EVs.
