Tesla Motors passed an important milestone in June as its rapidly expanding Supercharger network delivered more than one gigawatt hour of power (GWh) to Model S electric vehicles – that’s enough energy for 3.7 million electric miles! According to Tesla’s blog , the achievement saved 168,000 gallons of gas and offset 4.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Since the Superchargers were launched less than two years ago, the network has powered more than 24.7 million driving miles and prevented 1.1 million gallons of gasoline from being burned. It’s no secret that rhinos are being poached in numbers that are off the charts, and despite efforts to protect the animals , 2014 is on track to be the worst year in nearly a decade for rhino deaths. So far poachers have killed more than 500 rhinos, a majority of those in South Africa. Last year the number of rhinos poached ended at 1,004, the highest number since 2006. V-Tent is an eco-friendly parking system designed by Hakan Gürsu  that protects and charges vehicles. It is a collapsible canopy that can be used in both personal and public parking areas. Aiming to create a sustainable system for urban environment, V-Tent provides a safe space to store and charge electric cars, either at home or in the city. Functioning as a canopy that prevents weather damage, the design physically protects vehicles from environmental conditions. In its public use, V-Tent is designed as a space-saving parking space that runs for a fee. With a simple interface, users can select the amount of time and pay by card. Being informed with an estimated charging time, drivers can access the system interface remotely via smartphone applications. A band light on the V-Tent indicates availability and charge percentage with color and length. Designed with a flexible solar panel, the V-Tent’s collapsible structure enables it to appear only when it is in use, preventing visual complexity. The material used for the V-Tent canopy is a laminated multi-layered textile that holds flexible solar panels. The inner layer is covered with reflective material, and middle layer has a pattern with micro ventilation tubes in order to prevent the material from getting to hot. Portuguese energy company StarEnergy recently unveiled the INTI Solar Charge Point, a solar-powered charging station for mobile phones, tablets and laptops that can be installed in public spaces like parks, beaches, airports, bus/train stations, cities or even be used temporarily in open-air events. In its basic version it comes with Wi-Fi distribution, and in upgraded versions it can include video vigilance, LED lighting and support for advertising. The model has autonomy for two days without sun, provides Wi-Fi signal distribution 24 hours per day in a range of 150 meters and could charge 2000 mobile phones per day, with a 15 minutes charge each. + StarEnergy The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader.
