Each year the Consumer Electronics Show lights up Las Vegas with an exhilarating showcase of cutting-edge technology . Although the Nevada desert may not be the first place you’d look for energy-efficient tech, this year we spotted an array of green gems that exhibit trends towards more efficient, versatile, and sustainable gadgets. From universal eco chargers to multi-tasking sunglass cameras and kinetic-energy harvesting gizmos, read on for our top 5 green gadgets from CES 2011 ! Lady Gaga’s Polaroid Camera Sunglasses Lady Gaga teamed up with Polaroid to create this pair of high-tech stunner shades that conceal a secret surprise – a 12 megapixel camera that captures the world as you see it. Simply park your EV over the PowerSpot ‘s halo of blue light and it will transmit electricity via an induction pad at distances up to 4″. The technology isn’t quite ready to hit shelves and no charging times were available, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye out for. IDAPT Universal Gadget Charger With today’s prevalence of handheld gadgets it seems everyone has a shoebox filled with bulky wall wart chargers collecting dust. ASMO is the first mobile phone charger in the world that does not consume standby power. Every year, energy waste from the world’s 6.8 billion mobile phones costs us the equivalent of power produced by two nuclear plants . And the figures and waste are growing all the time. Which is why this simple gadget has the potential to revolutionize global electricity consumption. Unlike other chargers, ASMO automatically stops drawing energy when the phone is unplugged, yet it also fires right back up when the phone is plugged back in. The most common question we hear is: “How come no one has not come up with that idea yet?” Honestly, we don’t know. Luckily, we’ve got a patent pending. Just replace your old mobile charger with this unique technology, keep calm and start saving. If you’d like to own one of your own, check out the ASMO Kickstarter campaign . + ASMO Charger The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Want to see your story on Inhabitat ? Whether it’s cruising down a steep hill or whizzing past traffic with a smirk on your face, there are few riders who don’t have at least a small addiction to speed. If you really have the itch to fly down the road, you may want to check out the Specialized Turbo , and electric-assisted bike that can cruise at speeds of up to 27 mph. This is the first plug-in from the California-based company — the bike has already been rolling around Europe for a year — but US federal laws have until now deemed the bike too fast to be sold without calling it a motorcycle. The solution? A top-speed limiting gear that won’t let you break 27mph. Comments Off on Bad Buildings Kill – Rana Plaza and the Case For Stringent Building Practices

Photo by Andrew Biraj for Reuters We’ve been closely following the Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh, where over 700 people have lost their lives when an eight-story garment factory collapsed on April 24th. Rescue workers are still pulling victims from the wreckage and the death toll continues to rise. “ Fast Fashion ” and lack of corporate social responsibility certainly contributed to the disaster, but there’s also another issue at hand that is even more important – building practices. Bad buildings kill people. Without proper building codes , appropriate architecture & engineering, safe building practices and government oversight, inadequate building practices put people at risk. This incident makes it plainly obvious that the construction industry in Bangladesh is broken – and everyone involved, from the owners to the architects, engineers, planning commission, inspectors and even the municipality is to blame.
