Smart is planning to transition its small lineup of tiny cars to fully electric powertrains – in the not-too-distant future. The company has unveiled a preview of what the future smart fortwo could look like and how it could forever change the world of car-sharing. At first glance, the smart vision EQ fortwo concept looks like a more modern take on the current fortwo, but there’s more than meets the eye here. The EQ fortwo concept is smart’s vision of a future in which autonomous cars can improve the car-sharing experience in urban cities. Currently the car2go car-sharing service uses the smart fortwo, with over 2.6 million users worldwide. The vision EQ fortwo concept would build on this, since users wouldn’t have to search for a car or find a place to park it after they reach their destination. Instead, users summon the vision EQ fortwo, just like when they would request an Uber or Lyft ride. The vision EQ fortwo then drives autonomously to the pick up point and once the user reaches the destination the concept moves on its own to pick up the next user. It never actually parks on the street, like car2go , which will help reduce the amount of needed parking spaces. Related: From now on all Smart cars in North America will be electric On the outside, the smart vision EQ fortwo concept’s exterior communicates with users and pedestrians through a Black Panel Grille and LED displays, which replace traditional headlights and taillights. If the car is unoccupied, information about local events, the weather, news or the time can be displayed. The smart’s Black Panel Grille indicates whether the car is occupied by one or by two passengers. The smart vision EQ fortwo concept is powered by a 30 kWh battery. When its battery is depleted, it can automatically drive to a charging point to recharge its battery pack . Smart will debut the vision EQ fortwo concept next month at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. + smart Images @smart

IDEO wants to turn your car into a small-scale public transportation option

A new car-sharing vision may help ease congestion in metropolitan areas lacking mass transportation options. Cities like New York City and London have a decent public transportation system, but if you’ve ever tried to commute in a city like Los Angeles , you probably pray for a better way. California’s Ideo, a design company, offers one such alternative. Their latest concept looks past major infrastructure programs to an expanded view of the automobile sharing model as a means of reducing all of the negative affects of too many cars on the roads. Rather than focus on large public transit programs, IDEO’s latest project matches the current focus on making driving not only easier, but safer. And then expands on that concept by showcasing how an autonomous car can not only bring improvements to its owner’s life, but also help other community members get from point a to b and even raise a few bucks. Related: VW unveils the all-electric autonomous Microbus of the future The owner of the autonomous vehicle can choose to ride solo or even make a few extra dollars by picking up other passengers along the way – which is probably something some Uber and Lyft drivers already do today. Taking communal sharing one step further, the autonomous vehicle can also be rented out like a Zipcar to other people; the renters can even reduce the cost of the rental by agreeing to run errands for the owner of the car. Imagine that you’re renting the car to go on a grocery run, but while you’re there you pick up a few groceries for the car’s owner as well, which would lower the overall cost of the rental. Today car’s generally only serves their owners and the owner’s contacts, but IDEO’s concept would change that by making the car a public resource, similar to a bus or train but on a much smaller scale. Riders can use an app to book a ride, like with UberPOOL. Another big difference between this and other car-sharing programs comes down to a few simple settings that make the environment a bit more discrete. + IDEO All images @IDEO

China is a land known for its beauty, but also a lack of practices by which to protect that beauty. The times are a-slowly changing, though, and Chinese officials are making a commitment to protect at least some of the natural areas in their country. To achieve that goal, China is looking to create a network of national parks much like the system the United States launched over 140 years ago. An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded around two and a half minutes after launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, destroying over 5,200 pounds of cargo bound for the International Space Station. The rocket was traveling at around 2,900 mph some 27 miles up when it encountered what SpaceX referred to as an “anomaly on ascent,” ceased providing data to ground control, and was engulfed by a growing cloud of smoke before exploding and sending shards of the craft flying into the Atlantic Ocean. Encouraged by the rapid success of the “Boris Bike” sharing program, London has announced plans for an electric car sharing network. French billionaire Vincent Bolloré , the brains and money behind Paris’ Autolib car sharing program, will reportedly spend $166 million on the Source London program. The financial infusion will be enough to quadruple the number of electric vehicle charging stations around London, ultimately equipping the city with 6,000 places to juice up an EV. Leon Daniels, head of surface transport at Transport for London (TfL), told the Guardian that the car sharing program is “one more big step” in improving air quality in the capital, one of the most polluted in Europe. Designed by OOIIO Architecture , the Patchwork City Masterplan focuses on organizing the future growth of Linkoping, a city in southern Sweden with 100,000 inhabitants. The architects were challenged to experiment and explore new ways of designing cities – with all the complexities, sustainable construction systems and social cohesion aspects that a XXI st century city needs. The result is a contemporary city where the inhabitants colonize and personalize their own structure as they wish, crocheting pieces of their own city to generate a large patchwork together. + OOIIO Architecture Via ArchDaily The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader.
