The Cadillac ELR was released for the 2014 model year as a more luxurious alternative to the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, but unfortunately sales haven’t taken off. Cadillac has now unveiled a host of upgrades to the 2016 ELR that will make it more enjoyable to drive, with the best part being that the pricing has also been reduced by $9,005 compared to the 2014 model. Comments Off on Washington State Rep wants to turn old aircraft carriers into a massive floating bridge

First-term Republican Congressman Jesse Young , who represents the 26th District in the Washington State Senate, is attracting significant attention for an unusual detail in his transportation budget: he’s included $90,000 to conduct a feasibility study into building a massive floating bridge from decommissioned aircraft carriers . The bridge, Young proposes, would span the Sinclair Inlet and connect two of the towns he represents, repurposing old military equipment to create new infrastructure and a distinctive tourist attraction. But, alas, the proposal does have one or two issues that suggest it may be rather less than… feasible. Comments Off on Benefits of organic food go far beyond vitamins and minerals, despite study results

It makes sense to this writer that organic food is a healthier option than convention produce, which is grown with  synthetic pesticides and fertilizers . Take away those harmful chemicals, and organic food ought to be better for you, right? I am not alone in this line of thought, and as such, the organic food market is a $29 billion industry. That said,  a study is pouring cold water on this theory, suggesting that research into organic food has found “scant evidence of health benefits”… but is the new study missing the point? First, the ‘stick’—whether it be produced by Amazon , Roku or Google —replaced your cable box by providing online streaming to your TV, and now, Google’s latest dinky dongle offers to replace your home computer, by transforming your TV into a PC. The Chromebit plugs into your HDMI port, and according to Engadget crams in “a Rockchip 3288 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of eMMC memory, a USB 2.0 port, WiFi 802.11 ac support, Bluetooth 4.0, a Smart Ready controller and an ARM Mali 760 quad-core GPU.” It even swivels around to hide out of sight to keep your display looking sleek, and, well, TV like. The device is still at the testing stage, but the first Chromebits will be produced by ASUS, and will be available later this year for under $100 + Google Chrome Via Engadget Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: chrome bit , chromebit , chromebook , computer , dongle , google chromebit , hdmi , new google device , operating system , personal computer , turn tv into chromebook , turn tv into computer , turn tv into pc , usb tv , use tv as computer monitor

Comments Off on 2014 Cadillac ELR Extended Range EV to Debut Today at Detroit Auto Show

Cadillac is unveiling its version of the Chevy Volt today at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show , the 2014 Cadillac ELR . The Cadillac ELR draws its inspiration from the Cadillac Converj concept that was unveiled back in 2009. In addition to its electric powertrain, the Cadillac ELR’s exterior establishes a new, progressive proportion for the brand while the interior introduces a new design theme that will define future Cadillac models. The ELR is powered by GM EREV technology that is uniquely tuned for Cadillac in the ELR. It combines pure electric drive and an efficient, range-extending 1.4L gasoline-powered electric generator capable of generating 207 horsepower. The ELR’s battery is a T-shaped, 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack , located along the centerline of the vehicle, between the front and rear wheels for optimal weight distribution. The 5.5-foot-long, 435-pound pack supplies energy to an advanced electric drive unit that generates 295 lb.-ft. of instant torque to propel the vehicle. Using only the energy stored in the battery, the ELR will deliver an estimated range of about 35 miles of pure electric driving. Charging the ELR’s battery can be done with a 120V electrical outlet or a dedicated 240V charging station . The vehicle can be completely recharged in about 4.5 hours using a 240V outlet. In all-electric mode the ELR emits very little noise, so the ELR features, a driver-activated feature sounds a noise to alert pedestrians , particularly those with visual impairments, in an intersection. Inside the ELR has room for up to four passengers and features Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system and a Bose 10-channel audio system with active noise cancellation. It also gets advanced active safety features, including Safety Alert Seat, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, along with available Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and full-speed-range adaptive cruise control. “ELR marks a fresh, even surprising new dimension of Cadillac,” said Bob Ferguson, Cadillac global vice president. “An additional aspect of ELR’s appeal to will be exclusivity. It will be a specialized offering produced in limited numbers.” ELR production begins in the United States in late 2013 with sales starting in early 2014 in North America and expanding to global markets including China and Europe. + Cadillac
