Over the course of a year, the value of a barrel of oil fell from $110 to around $30 at the start of 2016. Over this same period, global annual investment in renewable energy continued to demonstrate strong growth, rising 4 percent over the previous year to reach an all-time high of $329.3 billion in 2015. “These figures are a stunning riposte to all those who expected clean energy investment to stall on falling oil and gas prices,” says Michael Liebreich , founder of the London-based research arm of Bloomberg LP. “They highlight the improving cost-competitiveness of solar and wind power.” As the world works to implement the Paris climate agreement, they’ve got the wind at their back as market forces seem to finally be working in the planet’s favor. The World Car of the Year Awards were given out today at the 2014 New York Auto Show , and the BMW i3 electric car was crowned the Green Car Of The Year and the Car Design Of The Year. The BMW i3 beat out the Audi A3 and the VW XL1 in the green car category, and the Mazda3 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the design category. With a roomy interior, a lightweight body, a 170-hp electric motor , and a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery backing it up, this sweet ride boasts an impressive range of 80-100 miles. Better yet, drivers wanting to go the extra mile can opt in for a two-cylinder range extender engine that will boost the i3?s range to about 180 miles.
