Comments Off on eBay To Power Its Flagship Data Center With a Bloom Energy Fuel Cell Farm

eBay recently announced that it’ll be teaming up with Bloom Energy as part of its “bold new vision for powering commerce with clean energy.” The online retail giant announced that it will be powering its flagship data center in Utah using a Bloom Energy fuel cell farm as its primary power source. eBay obviously needs a lot of energy to power its vast number of servers, so the fact that they are turning to a greener option than the predominately fossil fuel-powered electrical grid is a testament to how far clean energy has come. Bloom Energy Offering 10-Year Electricity Contracts

Comments Off on Bloom Energy Offering 10-Year Electricity Contracts

Bloom Energy is now offering companies 10-year electricity contracts for its Bloom Box fuel cells, without an upfront payment for the Bloom Box itself, which can cost up to $800,000. Companies like Walmart, Staples, Coca-Cola, Caltech, Kaiser Permanente and BD have already signed up for the program called “Bloom Electrons” that promises cleaner electricity at prices lower than standard power from the grid.  Lux Research has done the math and figured with government incentives and subsidies, the cost of electricity from a Bloom Box over ten years would come out to $0.08/kWh to $0.10/kWh compared to the average retail electricity costs of about $0.11/kWh, but in states without heavy subsidies, the costs would be more expensive at $0.13/kWh to $0.14/kWh

The news wires are buzzing today with hype surrounding the Bloom Box , a “revolutionary” micro power plant that is purported to produce a steady supply of clean, cheap, and efficient energy. The box is set to be officially unveiled this Wednesday, so details are scant and skepticism reigns, however the company has already garnered an impressive roster of clients including Google , Wal-Mart , Staples, and eBay (who purchased five boxes nine months ago and claims they are producing 100KW – enough energy to fuel 15% of their operations)
