We’ve been following closely the story of  the Texas man who paid $350,000  for the chance to kill an endangered  black rhinoceros , and we’re sad to report today that the hunter has succeeded. Corey Knowlton purchased the permit to kill the endangered animal in an auction in January 2014, igniting a firestorm of controversy . Federal authorities have granted permission to an American hunter to kill an endangered  black rhino in Namibia, and then bring the so-called trophy back to the United States. This is the most recent development in a saga that began nearly two years ago, when the Dallas Safari Club auctioned off a permit to hunt the endangered creature. The winning bidder paid $350,000 for the chance to bag a Black Rhino, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service  (USFWS) initially denied his request to bring the dead animal back to the U.S. However, upon determining that the proceeds from the auction and subsequent hunt will go towards conservation efforts, the agency has  given the go-ahead . “Killing it to save it” seems to be the misguided logic a Texas man is using to justify his plans to hunt a Black Rhino in Namibia. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is evaluating the hunter’s application for a permit to import the carcass of an endangered black rhino back into the U.S. Corey Knowlton paid $350,000 for the right to kill a black rhino from the Dallas Safari Club , according to The Guardian . Knowlton told WFAA “I’m a hunter… I want to experience a black rhino. I want to be intimately involved with a black rhino. If I go over there and shoot it or not shoot it, it’s beyond the point.” Read the rest of U.S. considers allowing hunter to kill nearly extinct black rhino Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: animal conservation , animal ethics , animal extinction , black rhino , critically endangered animals , endangered animals , extinct animals
