Bjarke Ingels Group has unveiled designs for the Lanescraper, a supertall building proposal that has been shortlisted for Melbourne’s Beulah Tower competition. Envisioned with a footprint of over 2.5 million square feet, the Lanescraper aims to serve as a bustling mixed-use destination housed in what could be the tallest tower in Australia. The $2 billion project would see a dramatic redevelopment of the post-industrial Southbank neighborhood, so-named after its location south of the Yarra River. Selected as one of six shortlisted designs, the Lanescraper reinterprets the concept of Melbourne’s laneways and block neighborhoods into a giant “vertical block” made up of a series of stacked and staggered volumes with laneway-inspired gaps in between. Rising to a height of nearly 1,200 feet, the Lanescraper will feature a mixed-use program with car parking, food and retail, interactive/discovery spaces and the BMW Experience Center at its lowest levels. Stacked above will be the entertainment and cultural options in addition to office and commercial space, childcare facilities and a hotel. The bulk of the building will be reserved for residential use, which occupies the uppermost levels. The design is developed around the idea of two cores—one large and one smaller—which lends itself to an optimized walking layout and circulation. The stacked and staggered boxes also help break down the mass of the building to a more human scale. The design was created in collaboration with Fender Katsalidis , ARUP, Jan Gehl, GTA Consultants, bloomimages, and Brick Visual. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group , the new home for the Shenzhen Energy Company has just reached completion in the business center of Shenzhen , China. Conceived as a new social and sustainable landmark in the heart of the city, the striking office development comprises two towers — one rising 220 meters to the north and the other to a height of 120 meters in the south — both of which are linked by a 34-meter-tall podium. Dubbed the Shenzhen Energy Mansion, the skyscraper is wrapped in an undulating facade that optimizes solar orientation while minimizing energy consumption. Created in collaboration with ARUP and Transsolar, BIG’s Shenzhen Energy Mansion design was selected the winner of an international design competition in 2009. Spanning an area of 96,000 square meters, this new headquarters for the Shenzhen Energy Company includes a pair of office towers and a mixed-use podium comprising the main lobbies, a conference center, a cafeteria and exhibition space. Circulation for visitors and workers are divided; the commercial spaces can be accessed through sliding glass walls on the north and south ends of the buildings while office workers enter from the front plaza to the lobby. Instead of the traditional glass curtain wall, BIG designed a pleated building envelope specially engineered to reduce solar loads and glare. Site studies and passive solar principles optimize the building’s orientation, which includes maximized north-facing openings for natural light and minimized exposure on the sunnier sides. When local architecture practice HW-Studio was tapped to redevelop an abandoned warehouse into a food market in the Mexican city of Morelia, the firm looked to the site’s extant conditions and the surroundings for inspiration. HW-Studio founder and lead project architect Rogelio Vallejo Bores was born and raised in the city and loved the site’s sense of solitude — a quality that he says is uncommon in the downtown of any Mexican city. As a result, he and his team used a minimalist design and material palette to create a food market, named the Mercado ‘Cantera’ (also known as the Morelia Market), that would defer to its surroundings. Completed this year on a budget of approximately $80,000 USD, the new food market in Morelia spans an area of 3,444 square feet. Before the architects began work on the design, they studied the perimeter and found it was located two blocks from one of the country’s most important music schools — a former convent of XCI Century Dominican nuns of Santa Catalina de Siena — as well as one of the most beloved and popular city squares, Las Rosas. Then the architects mapped out the most popular food spots in the area and found that people congregated in the public squares to eat. As a result, the guiding principles of the food market are borrowed from the design of public squares, from the use of natural materials, axial routes and sense of openness and connection with nature. “We thought that the place had lost its soul,” said the architects of the warehouse due to its numerous renovations. “Everything antique with architectural value would be rescued, and the new would formally and materially have a different nature: a white and defined nature that would demonstrate its own presence and its own historical and conceptual moment. With this, we would try to achieve a balance between the new and the old.” Related: Grain silo transformed into a community food hall in the Netherlands In contrast to the stone walls and other antique details that were preserved, the architects inserted minimalist and modern white volumes to house the food vendors. They also added a new tree-lined central corridor between the new volumes to emphasize the open-air market’s connection with the outdoors. The eating areas are located on the top of the stalls. Bjarke Ingels Group has revealed images for the firm’s first-ever tiny house—the A45—designed for the prefab-housing startup Klein . Inspired by the traditional A-frame cabin, the A45 takes on an angular form conducive to rain run-off and easy construction. The 180-square-foot timber cabin boasts a completely customizable interior design and can be built within four to six months in any location. Constructed in Upstate New York, the prototype for the A45 tiny house is clad in blackened pine with a triangular glazed end wall to immerse homeowners in nature even when they’re indoors. The triangular floor-to-ceiling window—made up of seven glass pieces—and the soaring 13-foot-tall ceiling help create a sense of spaciousness despite the structure’s small 180-square-foot size. The cabin is slightly elevated on four concrete piers in order to minimize site impact and to give homeowners the freedom to place the tiny home in areas without heavy machinery. “The resulting crystal-like shape gives A45 an ever-changing appearance,” said BIG in a statement about their modification of the traditional A-frame cabin. “Upon entering, the 180 [square-foot] interior space reflects a minimal Nordic abode prioritized for ‘hyggelig’ comfort and design.” The subtle natural material palette, from the exposed timber frame built of solid pine to the Douglas Fir floor planks and the space-grade insulating natural cork walls, further emphasizes the Scandinavian aesthetic. Cedar clads the compact bathroom, and the fixtures were sourced from VOLA. The home get all of its power from  solar panels, and the service equipment is hidden from view in the back. The cozy interior is furnished with a Morsøe wood-burning stove and handcrafted Nordic furniture including pieces by Carl Hansen and a bed fitted with Soren Rose Studio’s Kvadrat fabrics. The iconic toy company just unveiled official images of a new LEGO Architecture kit that’ll let you build your very own LEGO experience center at home. The 774-piece model replica of the nearly complete LEGO House in Billund, Denmark will be sold exclusively at the center when it opens on September 28. The new LEGO House, also known as the “House of the Brick,” will be an experience center where fans can learn about the history of the company, the philosophy of LEGO play, and interact with LEGO through a wide variety of hands-on experiences. Starchitect Bjarke Ingels , an enthusiastic LEGO fan, was tapped to design the LEGO House project and drew inspiration from the modularity of the toy brick. Design lovers: pull up a sofa and get ready for a serious Netflix binge sesh. On February 10, Netflix is revealing a show called Abstract: The Art of Design that features conversations about the revolutionary impetus of design. The series features rock star architect and BIG founder Bjarke Ingels, graphic designer Paula Scher, automotive designer Ralph Gilles and interior designer Ilse Crawford, among others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=63&v=DYaq2sWTWAA Netflix just released a preview of the show, which will be released in its entirety on February 10th. It shows Bjarke Ingels flying through the air like Superman, which is apt, since Ingels promises to be a superhero of a star for a show about design. Over 200 people died in Bangladesh in 2016 because of lightning strikes, according to official tallies. In an effort to reduce lightning fatalities, the Bangladesh government is turning to nature . They aim to plant one million palm trees to absorb lightning damage and save lives. In 2016 alone, lightning could have killed as many as 349 people, according to one independent monitor. That number is so much higher than the official tally because people residing in rural areas sometimes don’t report a death to police. 82 people died from the phenomenon on just one day in May, and the government ultimately described lightning as a natural disaster in 2016. They hope to combat the issue with multiple measures, the first of which could be tree-planting . Related: Labyrinthine resort in Bangladesh lets nature take over Disaster management secretary Shah Kamal told AFP, “We’ve already started planting palm trees in rural areas in an effort to reduce the number of deaths due to lightning. We’ll plant one million palm trees by June this year.” A similar program already appears to be successful in Thailand. Although lightning can damage trees, their presence will prevent electric charges from coursing through the ground. Deforestation may have played a role in the deaths. Experts have said so many fatalities occurred partly because there weren’t enough trees whose branches would be able to absorb lightning strikes. Bangladesh Meteorological Department former head Shah Alam told AFP lightning strikes have increased in rural areas devastated by increased deforestation, as farmers have cut trees down to cultivate rice and other crops. It may take a while for the tree planting program in Bangladesh to produce results, but it’s still worth pursuing, according to Alam, who said, “Palm trees take years to grow. At the gate, passengers board a six-seater cuboid Hyperpod (each designed with different seating arrangements) that can move autonomously onto roads to pick up or drop off passengers. Four cuboid pods are loaded onto a ‘transporter,’ a pressurized vessel attached to a chassis for levitation and propulsion, which can accelerate to 1,100 kilometers per hour and “hyperjump” through a tube track to another portal, where the individual pods are discharged and move onto the street to drop passengers off at their final destination. Dutch architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has released a teaser video showing off its design of a Hyperloop project that promises to link Abu Dhabi and Dubai . The ultra high-speed capsule transport aims to turn the 93-mile trip between the two busy cities into a minutes-long commute, offering an efficient means of moving both people and cargo. Tech giant Google  will be able to build its massive canopied greenhouse headquarters designed by BIG and Heatherwick Studio after all. When the Mountain View City Council gave most of the land Google needed for the new HQ design to LinkedIn last year, most people thought Google wouldn’t get to build the ambitious project after all. Heatherwick and BIG even a revealed scaled-down design  in the hopes of making things work. But after cutting a three million square feet land deal with LinkedIn, Google can now have the original design  it always wanted. The land deal includes 2.4 million square feet of real estate that’s not yet developed, and 1 million square feet of developed land, which includes LinkedIn’s present HQ. The swap will allow Google to pursue their original designs, and LinkedIn will be able to construct a new cohesive HQ. Mountain View Director of Community Development Randy Tsuda told the Silicon Valley Business Journal, “This actually works out well for both parties, and the city of Mountain View.” Mountain View Mayor Pat Showalter said the city “look[s] forward to continuing our relationships with these active corporate citizens.” Some of Google’s plans will still have to go through the Mountain View City Council, such as the tech giant’s dream of constructing housing on one of the sites where LinkedIn had once planned to put their new HQ, Shoreline Commons. LinkedIn’s plans had included retail stores and restaurants, and Mountain View officials have expressed a desire to see some of those plans go through. Syufy owns around 15 acres of Shoreline Commons and planned to build a health club and movie theater there, and Google VP of Real Estate and Workplace Services, Northern California Mark Golan said Google is “generally supportive” of some of those ideas. Golan said, “It’s almost serendipity in terms of the holdings both parties had.
