Years ago, PumpTire developed a bicycle tire prototype able to pump air into itself as riders rode along – relying on the compression of the tire on the ground to suck air inside. Unfortunately, the entire tire had to be replaced once it wore down. Now the same developers have created a bike tube with a similar system, and it’s compatible with standard bike tires. San Franciscan cyclists will soon have an edge above automobile traffic, with a new elevated bicycle lane heading for the southern Mission District. Planned to line Valencia Street, the bike path will give cyclists a safer ride, with a six foot wide lane raised two inches above traffic. The slight elevation will help prevent over eager motorists from drifting into bike lanes , keeping cyclists safer. Biking through city traffic can put some cyclists on edge, but a new smart bike is helping riders keep safe by warning them about oncoming traffic. Developed by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) , the new smart bike is equipped with special sensors that can detect approaching vehicles, as well as other bicycles and obstacles. If a car or other obstacle is getting too close for comfort, the bike’s seat or handlebars vibrate to let the rider know of the impending danger. You can instantly see when a car slows down due to the bright red brake lights – but the same isn’t true for bikes. That’s why Revolights just launched the Arc – the world’s first integrated brake light for bicycles. The Arc uses Revolights technology to track wheel speed, so it can sense when you’re slowing down and switch on a bright red LED to alert traffic behind you. It also doubles as a fender, it can easily be seen from both sides and behind, and it’s powered by a lithium ion battery that can be recharged by any USB port. Revolights just launched a Kickstarter campaign where you can pick up your own Arc light – check it out here ! + Revolights Arc Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: Arc , bicycle safety , bicycles , bike brake light , bike light , green design , green transportation , LED , Light , Revolights , Revolights arc , sustainable design , sustainable transportation

Bright orange reflective vests might keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe at night but they don’t exactly scream cool, which often discourages their use. Enter Halo Belt 2.0 — the glowing LED, USB rechargeable safety device that can be worn as a belt or shoulder strap. When the San Francisco startup Halo Belt Company launched its original Kickstarter campaign in 2012, there were immediate design comparisons to the illuminated characters in the 1982 Disney science fiction film “Tron.” The latest version continues the “Tron” theme with a redesign that is brighter and at a lower price point compared to the original Halo Belt that retailed at $85. The new and improved Halo Belt 2.0 can be purchased for a $37 Kickstarter pledge that includes free shipping. It looks like actor Liam Neeson is not “Taken” with NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s efforts to ban horse-drawn carriages in the city. While de Blasio has blasted hansom cabs as a cruel practice, Neeson argues that ending them would leave many New Yorkers without jobs. Who do you side with on this issue? Lock8 is the world’s first smart bike lock that can be operated via smartphone ! The keyless lock has a GPS tracker that helps users find their bicycles when they are either misplaced or stolen. It is sensitive to motion and temperature, and uses a gyro accelerometer to send push notifications to phones, which triggers a painfully loud alarm. It can send alerts to your family or the community, but also enables users to share the location and e-Key with friends who might need to borrow the bike. A helmet is a bicyclist’s only line of defense in the event of a collision, but what if they had the protection of airbags ? Dutch car manufacturer TNO has developed the world’s first exterior automobile airbag, and the safety measure could help save the lives of both bicyclists and pedestrians, which account for a third of all traffic fatalities in the Netherlands. Project Aura: Bicycle Safety Lighting System from Project AURA on Vimeo . If you’re tired of regular ol’ bike lights, and appreciate a clever verb, check out these two ideas for illuminating your bike on the road, via the rims. One is called the Aura system, the other is called Revolights. Not only do they look cool, they allow you to be seen from the side, instead of just the front and back with traditional bike lights.
