Cyclists roll through Copenhagen, one of the world’s greatest cycling cities, at an average speed of 10 miles per hour (15.5km/h). Imagine cyclists flying along at more than four times that speed without expending any extra energy. That’s one of the goals of the Human Power Team at the University of Delft, Netherlands, who want to see more cyclists commuting farther at faster speeds. As part of this goal, they have designed the VeloX, the world’s fastest bicycle , which holds the record of 133.78 km/h (more than 80 miles per hour). The ultra-light carbon fiber Vanhawks Valour bike uses sensors to warn you when cars enter your blind spots. It sends vibrations to your handlebars when it picks up a car driving closely from the back and has a Bluetooth connection that measures speed, distance and calories burnt. All of this data can be accessed on the Vanhawks app for Android, iPhone and the Pebble watch. The student team behind Valour has launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to further develop the concept. Most bike frames are made from steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber , but in recent years custom bike makers have started using a new material for a more stylish ride: wood . It might seem like a throwback, but wood frames are strong enough to meet safety and durability standards. And there’s another benefit of producing wood frames — they look great. French bike maker BSG Bikes , which was founded by Thierry Boltz and Claude Saos, is the latest company to combine wood frames with metal components, and the result is a timeless bike that makes you want to go pedaling around the French countryside. The 4StrikeBike features handlebars that double as an extra set of pedals! Designed by Dutch firm TSG Essempio , the bike is a real treat for passionate cyclists, people with back problems and compulsive multi-taskers. The hand pedals can be fixed upright when navigating city traffic or engaged to provide extra power when crossing longer distances at higher speeds. Retired Dutch surgeon Lex van Stekelenburg came up with the idea after developing back problems. The bike works therapeutically by distributing body weight more naturally than a conventional bicycle.
