We’ve been fascinated with the concept of duplitecture —the practice of cloning entire buildings —ever since we discovered that Chinese developers were knocking off European architectural icons and, in some cases, even entire towns in the Chinese countryside. Duplitecture expert Bianca Bosker recently published a new book on the subject ; Original Copies: Architectural Mimicry in China . We recently had the chance to pick the author’s brain about how and why this trend has spread so prolifically across China in particular. From Chinese clones of the Eiffel Tower to the White House , the country has produced nearly exact duplicates of numerous famous structures from around the world—but why? Check out our interview with Bosker as she answers that question and others about what these copycat buildings signify in terms of China’s culture, and how they are perceived by the rest of the globe. State College, PA — Students at Penn State are turning a trailer into an off-grid disaster relief shelter that will be well-suited for both first-response, as well as long-term aid. The trailer, called Apparatus X, will have a “green wall” for food, a rainwater collection/filtration system, and an array of solar panels. It will be completely expandable, able to convert an empty lot into a construction site. It will also include a design studio and tool storage. Currently, the team is raising the finances required to build the project. Apparatus X is already sponsored by IBM and Boeing, but the main source of funds will be a campaign on Indiegogo , which launched on April 2nd. Although the team is currently working on the prototype, they’re envisioning an entire fleet of Apparatus X vehicles in the near future. Ultimately, the team hopes to redefine disaster relief in a way that is sustainable, mobile, and effective. + Apparatus X The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. Can’t decide on a green roof or a vertical garden ? No problem, just do both! R&Sie Architects designed the aptly-named ‘ Lost in Paris ‘ house for an ‘urban witch’ who feeds the house through 300 glass-blown pods. A potion of rainwater and plant nutrients nourishes 1200 ferns drop-by-drop throughout the year. The houseplants are entirely hydroponic, and completely engulfing the 1400 square foot concrete home. The blanket of ferns protects the house from outside elements and regulates its inside temperature, all the while adding life and freshness to the neighborhood. Duplitecture: Bianca Bosker’s “Original Copies” Tackle’s China’s Copycat Architecture Trend

Author Bianca Bosker’s new book, Original Copies: Architectural Mimicry in Contemporary China addresses the very real, very new duplitecture movement that has emerged in China. Last month, we reported that a copy of Zaha Hadid’s Wangjing Complex had popped up—but this architectural plagiarism isn’t an isolated incident. Instead, the Asian country has seen a replicated Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees, Queen’s Guard, the White House, a residence lifted from Dorchester, and an entire Swiss Alpine village , all set within the contrasting Chinese cityscape. Yet the buildings are not used as Epcot Center-style tourist traps, but instead foster real life, inhabited and used by real Chinese families. Bosker’s book follows this replicating trend, recounting its evolution, and assessing how living in and amongst copycats of these iconic buildings has changed and shaped the behavior and culture of their residents. Original Copies is now available in bookstores and online, published by University of Hawaii Press. + Bianca Bosker, Original Copies Permalink | Add to del.icio.us | digg Post tags: architectural copies China , Bianca Bosker , copy cat architecture , duplitecture , eco design , green design , Original Copies: Architectural Mimicry in Contemporary China , sustainable design , Zaha Hadid Wangjing Complex
