This spring, one year after rolling out an extensive vehicle charging network in Israel, electric car company Better Place filed for bankruptcy . Better Place was the first major electric car maker in the world to use interchangeable batteries, which could be swapped out at charging stations, enabling car owners to drive long distances without needing to stop and refuel. This week, an Israeli court allowed a group of investors to purchase Better Place for less than $12 million, giving the company a second chance . The once-promising electric car company Better Place has filed for bankruptcy. The company sought to put in place a large and innovative electric vehicle network with interchangable batteries , which could be switched out and replaced in about the same amount of time it takes to fill up a tank of gas. But that concept never truly came to fruition, partly because it never attracted enough buyers to become a commercial success. On Sunday, the company announced plans to liquidate. A selection of 400-year-old plants that were squished by glaciers have come back from the dead, BBC News reports . Researchers exploring the Teardrop Glacier high up in the Canadian Arctic say that the ice has been retreating at a rate of three to four meters every year since 2004, exposing land that has been covered since the Little Ice Age that took place between AD 1550 and AD 1850. While on a recent expedition, the University of Alberta team discovered something that had a “greenish tint.” It turned out to be ancient bryophytes sprouting new growth after 400 years of dormancy! Comments Off on Amazon Acquires a Robot Company to Improve Working Conditions In Its Warehouses

On Tuesday, Amazon announced the purchase of Kiva Systems, a company that makes warehouse robots like the ones already being used in inventory and logistics-heavy retailers like Zappos and Staples. This new development comes at a time when  Apple has been under fire for its labor practices in its Chinese factories, and concern continues to grow about how big name retailers are failing to provide humane working conditions for their manufacturing employees in the name of affordable products. While Apple may be in the spotlight right now, we shouldn’t forget that just months ago Amazon was also called out for the unfair and often brutal working conditions it subjected its shipping employees to – but in less than six months, Amazon has become increasingly sensitive to the issues and is exploring various remedies such as this latest measure involving robots.
