Smog levels in Beijing reached dangerously high levels this past winter, and in January pollution levels were 10 to 15 times what the World Health Organization classifies as a health risk. Now China is finally doing something about the capital’s pollution problem. Officials recently announced that within the next 12 months, Beijing will impose a fuel pollution tax that will be added to standard gas prices in order to dissuade residents from driving as much. Billionaire Chen Guangbiao is taking China’s air pollution problem into his own hands – by launching a line of canned air. In a move that rivals a scene out of Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs , the entrepreneur has created a line of designer air and is selling it for market consumption to raise awareness of the thick smog that has become the norm in Beijing . As North China’s air quality has pushed the limits of the Air Quality Index over the past month, Guangbiao hopes his canned air stunt will snap leaders into accepting the hazardous reality of Beijing’s air pollution problem. Bees have had a rough time in the past few years – from the Varroa mite and colony collapse disorder to factory waste contaminating their honey . Heeding the insect’s buzz for help, UK home improvement retailers B&Q and Wickes have pledged to withdraw products containing a family of compounds called neonicotinoids – pesticides linked to the decline in bee populations. B&Q will stop selling its only product using imidacloprid, and Wickes will remove products with thiamethoxam, both of which are neonicotinoids. Together with clothianidin, these three chemicals are identified by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as nerve agents that are seriously damaging to the health of pollinators.
