World Cup fever is in the air – but in Santiago, Chile it’s literally polluting the skies. The governor of Santiago recently put a call out to citizens not to light their barbecues during World Cup soccer games because all the smoke from grilling is worsening air conditions in the capital city. Reuters reports that pollution levels in Santiago reached a five-year high last weekend, after Chile played its first match against Australia in neighboring Brazil. Back in March, Inhabitat reported that One Earth Designs (OED) enlisted Google Glass creator Tom Chi to perfect the design of their parabolic solar cooker, the SolSource . Readers wanted to know where they could get one, but at the time, it was only being tested in developing nations where affordable cooking fuel is hard to come by. Well, at long last, the opportunity is here! OED recently announced the launch of a Kickstarter campaign that will bring the SolSource to U.S. customers. Only 24 hours in, the crowdfunding project has already raised almost $9,000. In a bit of an impromptu barbecue-themed week, I thought I’d ask about building the key part of the experience: the barbecue itself. This is partly because I’m interested in hearing bbq ideas and partly because I’m thinking of building myself a little smokehouse for my birthday and I suspect there will be a bit overlap – and asking about smokehouses may be a little obscure.
